Sorry 'braska and jack for not starting this sooner. I think this would be a great thread to reference for other dawgs who want to break for a road trip. You can cut and paste some of your stuff here if you want. It is up to you.

I have read Nebraska's, Jack's and other's Baseball Park road experiences and thought it would be good to to have a Dawg's on the Road thread so that folks from the RR could share their baseball roadtrips and maybe let us know tips of where to stay, eat, catch a RS game on TV or whatever.

Road trip to Pittsburgh | #1 | ||

Just got back from Pittsburgh yesterday. We had a good time. Pittsburgh is an interesting city. I found it difficult to get around for a larger city. PNC park is beautiful. Good atmosphere, well laid out and nice amenities too. I actually got the opportunity to get out on the field as well there. Talk about exciting. Also met the Pirates GM Dave Littlefield. All in all a fun trip but not sure I would recommend it to others unless you are a baseball junkie like me. I took a bunch of pictures as well. But I am not one to bore you all with pictures of my trip.

Great idea Sue !!!
And if you wish (would you?), you can move my post on the Rangers trip to this thread. And to the contrary, pictures of ball parks that we have not been to are far from boring .... so be a stand up guy and let us see your pictures jack... especially the Red Sox fans and their kids ... new.photos.yahoo.com/airc...2402973557 "I don't like them fellas who drive in two runs and let in three." - Casey Stengel

Rob, Grace, and I attended the 1st 2 games of the Oakland series. Grace did GREAT for the 1st game - didn't get fussy until the 10th inning! For the 2nd game though, she was fussy throughout. I think she was overtired, and she did pop a tooth through a couple of days later.
Game 1 was a GREAT game, very exciting! We just wish that the outcome had been different. As Rob said, the players did everything they could to win that one, and the manager tried his best to lose it. Game 2 I don't remember much about - I was trying to keep Grace from exploding, and we left after 7. For game 4, we were driving down the "Avenue of the Giants" in the Redwood forest, listening to our XM. Because of all the "giants," the reception was intermittent, but we were pulling for Curt to get his 1st no-no. We had the A's broadcast, and the announcer kept TALKING about it! "Well, Curt Schilling has a no-hitter through 5..." etc. I was saying "SHUT UP!" to the radio but of course he wouldn't. Finally got him in the 9th, as we all know. We are also planning to see the Sox in Detroit and Seattle this year. |

Quote: I don't know Phil, I was wondering the same thing. Rob said that NO ONE used to mention it, even the opposing team's announcers! I guess it's all part of a bygone era... there are so few gentlemen left that the lack of them is being felt even in the baseball announcing arena. No disrespect meant to Jerry & Don, I guess it's just a tradition that's gone out the window. |

Having been introduced to the Red Sox at Fenway in 1952, I have long thought that not bringing attention to a no-no while broadcasting was simply believing in the power of some impish creature to affect the outcome of a game. Most of us would agree that only one spirtual power might have the influence to do that.
The fact that players stay away from a pitcher in the dugout says more to that pitcher than any words could. Not talking to the pitcher might be a good thing so as not to distract him and break his concentration. But to not discuss it out of earshot of the pitcher or from some dweeb like me who is 1500 miles away?? Come on... the boogey man doesn't really exist does he? Surely you do not really believe that discussing the obvious is 'bad luck'??? or can influence the outcome of an event?? I don't normally agree with you but on this "bad luck" thing I must concur. Not talking about it or not talking to a pitcher does nothing to the game itself. It may help the pitcher focus like it has been said but not the outcome. There are a lot of superstitions in baseball but not one has ever affected the outcome of a game. If a player doesn't step on a foul line for luck it only affects his head. If that works for him fine. I personally have trouble with the idea of luck and someone or some team being "luckier" than another. That to me implies god plays favorites. But that takes down another path and I won't go there.

In this 500 channel world, I don't have a problem with mentioning a no-hitter. Orsillo did it during the Nomo no-no knowing that people are constantly changing channels and if you mention it, people will stick around.
The Detroit announcers did not during Verlander's no-hitter keeping up with that silly superstition. Vin Scully would mention a no-hitter in progress during his broadcasts and they did not seem to affect Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan and Jack Morris, so I have no problem if one is mentioned. I would mention it in chat if I were there. Ken |

I see most of my Sox games at Fenway, but last week was in Anaheim for the Schilling game. It was quite an experience to see RSN invade Southern California.
About 20-25% of the fans were wearing some sort of RS gear. The "let's go Red Sox" chants started before the first pitch. But the funniest event happened in the 7th inning during the singing of "Take me out". When the song got to the line of "root for the home team", all the Sox fans drowned out "home team" with "Red Sox". The verse then repeated, so anyone (like me) who wasn't ready for this, made it even louder the second time. I've seen away games in NY, Toronto & Oakland, but never had seen anything like this. It was a lot of fun, and the mellow Angels fans didn't seem to mind. (Then again, they were leading most of the game, so that probably didn't hurt). 2004 World Champions...forever!

US Cellular is not cheaper. However, the people are very nice in Chicago and I met so many other RS fans. For what I overpaid to sit behind a foul pole, I got right behind the dugout for the last two innings. I even got a free dinner for helping a group of people from the hotel get to the park. Tomorrow looks good. Whenever I wake up,I will by an implement which signifies what could happen tomorrow. You know I am too superstitious to say it.

Hopefully, this did not involve a drive down the Dan Ryan. I would think the Red Line would be a much better way to go.
