Blue Jays: Burnett will be pitching on short rest against the Red Sox in an effort to catch up to the Wild Card leaders. He was dominant Tuesday against the White Sox in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader, allowing just one hit and one unearned run over seven innings. He struck out seven batters to surpass his single-season best of 203. In two starts against Boston this season Burnett is 1-0 with a 3.07 ERA. He walked eight batters in those two starts combined, a total that will likely have to come down this time around.
Red Sox: In less than a month, Byrd has turned into a stopper for the Red Sox. Since being traded to the Red Sox on Aug. 12, he's 4-1 and hasn't lost, aside from his Boston debut. He's also a perfect 6-0 in his past six road starts going back to July 21. Since that July 21 start, Byrd is 8-1 with a 2.61 ERA. His last time out, in unforgiving Rangers Ballpark, Byrd mixed his pitches well and kept them down in the zone to shut out the Rangers over 6 2/3 innings. Saturday will mark Byrd's third start against the Blue Jays since he came to the Red Sox. The right-hander faced Toronto in three straight starts from Aug. 9-22, going 2-1 with a 4.03 ERA and a complete game.
