Red Sox: Lester was likely the most consistent Boston starter throughout the
first half, and even though he was touched up for five runs in his last outing against Minnesota, the Sox have to be encouraged by what lay ahead for the young
lefty. After a no-hitter in May and a shutout win at Yankee Stadium in July, Lester was right at the top of the list as a viable candidates for the All-Star
Game who were not selected. He pitched a team-high 125 innings in the first half of the season.
Mariners: Washburn said his arm was zapped after a 39-pitch first inning on Saturday night, but he grinded out a quality start anyway. He gave up two runs in that first inning and another one in the second, then settled down. Washburn went six innings, giving up just those three runs, and only one was earned. He was in line for the win until Brandon Morrow blew a save in the ninth. Washburn has given up two earned runs or less in six of his last seven starts.
