The Black Hole |
Lead | ||
|
Well after a disappointing road trip with the Yankees and Rays, I thinks it's high time Tito/Theo do something with the black hole in this lineup hitting
7,8 and 9. I know there isn't anything to do with Tek and he will likely get on a hot streak sooner or later. But Crisp and Lugo are just
horrible.............. with no signs of coming out of it. Maybe Lugo can get a little hammy issue or Fenway flu and we can give Lowrie a shot for a couple of
weeks. I would like to see Moss get some PT if Manny is going to do most of the DHing. Ellsbury has been very disappointing as well as he looks like he has
little confidence at the plate or on the bases recently. While the pen has been disastrous, the Sox have had chances to win these games. Maybe some home
cooking will help leading into the break......

It's like the whole team has been in a funk since the end of the last homestand.

Agree with everything you said...would love to see Lowrie as Lugo/Cora don't cut it. Crisp/Moss is pretty much a wash in my book, and I'm also
surprised about Ellsbury...even his outs are lame right now. Don't know if it's the hand injury, be he pretty much hasn't been the same since
then.

What about the .218 hitting all-star catcher?

Well, what you are observing is certainly real, and very frustrating. You do need to be careful making draastic moves because baseball always has its ups and
downs. Pedroia was hitting like crap not long ago, suddenly he is red hot. Lowrie is not really a big hitter, but I do like the guy a lot. All three of those
guys (Crisp, Tek, and Lugo) have the possibility of snapping out of it and getting back on track.
If Lugo stays cold for a while (a few more weeks) I would not be surprised if they try to shake things up a bit. Crisp is an up and down hitter. Granted, a little more down than up, but he will have his ups. Obviously Tek is not going anywhere. I think once Papi returns, it will help a lot. With Papi back, either Ellsbury or Crisp will sit, and Tito can play the hot hand. We just need Papi back as a start. |

Don't be so hasty to jump on players when the whole team seems to be in a funk. All hitters on all teams have their ups & downs every year. This team, this year is no exception. Just look at the numbers: Ellsbury has batted .282 in April, .291 in May, .245 in June & so far .294 in July. He had one not so good month in June. Pedroia has batted .306 in April, .260 in May, .356 in June & so far .412 in July. Awesome. My favorite Dawg ... but he did have one so-so month in May. Drew has batted .269 in April, .296 in May, .337 in June & so far .258 in July. J.D. really stepped it up in June to fill the 3-hole, but in April & July he is just o.k. Manny has batted .344 in April, .228 in May, .286 in June & so far .208 in July. Up & down ... pretty terrible in May & July. Lowell was hurt in April and has batted .301 in May, .351 in June & so far .214 in July. Great all year until the past 8 days. Youk has batted .360 in April, .300 in May, .337 in June & so far .333 in July. Can you say team MVP ... consistently fantastic all year. Tek has batted .273 in April, .299 in May, .122 in June & .143 in July. On par in April, Great in May, bad slump since the beginning on June. Crisp has batted .291 in April, .209 in May, .310 in June, & so far .125 in July. Really up & down. Terrible in May & July. Similar to Manny??!! Lugo has batted .267 in April, .262 in May, .260 in June & so far .200 in July. Just o.k. all year, but down this month. Coco batted .310 for the entire month of June, but now he is a black hole because he has had a bad week? Lugo is a career .270 hitter ... he has been just shy of that all year, but now he also is a black hole due to a bad week? Varitek is our defensive guy...he is there for the pitchers (and doing a great job) ... any offense you get out of the position is just gravy (but he was
batting almost .300 in May)
Manny Ramirez & Mike Lowell (fan favorites) are also having a horrible week ... no calling for them to sit

Manny Ramirez & Mike Lowell (fan favorites) are also having a horrible week ... no calling for them to sit I agree with everything you have said Carl except for this line. I have heard MANY calls to sit at least Manny, but that is very difficult without the big man in there.

Tito made a nice move putting Moss into the 7-8-9 mix in the order. Needed to do somethign to shake it up, and that move worked. Moss kept things going rather
than just submitting a strike out or weak ground out.
Everyone will slump now and then, and they'll also bounce back. Tough thing is for a manager to juggle when to sit people to get them on track, and when to let them play through it. For a guy like Manny, you'd like to let him play through it. Other guys might benefit from relaxing for a night or two. Either way, the sky is not falling. You have to figure the Sox will lose roughly 65 games this year. That is a lot of games to lose, and losing never feels good. But, you have to just keep plugging. |

I was shocked to see Ellsbury's day/night splits: .364 Day, .238 night. Maybe he has some vision problems?

What would it take to get either or both from the Rockies? Is it worth some of our top prospects?
The next week to 10 days will be telling as Papi moves towards a rehab assignment.

Those looking for Jason Varitek to rebound may not see it. As I am sure the RS argued to Boras during the negotiations after the 2004 season Tek is showing
the signs of having caught more games than any other RS catcher when he comes to the plate.
In 2004 he was a .296 hitter with .872 OPS. These are terrific numbers for a catcher. While he enjoyed a bit of bounce from 2006 in 2007 (his knee clearly could have impacted his plate appearances) the decline has been steady. His LH numbers this year are just bad and that is where he is going to get the majority of his ABs. His scouting report shows he is dead meat on curves and sliders. Kevin Cash has had fewer PAs by far but he has better stats. The more likely improvements are going to come from Ellsbury learning to read the inside pitches and knowing when to layoff and when to turn on them and Lowrie's offense making up for a lack of range in the field. An interesting drama will be Varitek's fate at the end of the year. He does do a nice job calling games with the stats the RS provide him. But he has become a catch and throw guy that doesn't throw well. When you watch a catcher like Jose Molina work you have to wonder just how much Varitek's game calling is worth minus the plus offense he used to bring in his early 30's? Will Boras/Varitek and the RS agree on that value? |
