Heard on the radio this morning that there was some talk about Barry Bonds... Barry Bonds? In Fenway? What say you?

The Bonds rumor was mentioned on last nights broadcast (Joe Morgan) by saying he had read it in a newspaper. In chat, we all yelled NOOOOO in unison.

Unlike the "win at any cost" mentality of another local professional sports team, I doubt this ownership would ever allow such a move. They have
worked too hard to assemble a group of apparently "clean" players. No desire to lead the league in arrests with the Henry Group.

As enticing as Bonds is since he fills such a huge hole, there is no way Bonds finds himself playing at Fenway park. I can only imagine the boos he would
receive every time he stepped to the plate. I trust nothing I hear from the likes of Joe Morgan. The guy is an idiot.

I'd take Bonds if he was interested and if Ortiz is on the shelf longer than what is currently thought. The guy can hit and win you some games and his
trial isn't until next year.

They should have internal discussions - you always have to weigh and consider every option. We know Bonds would be an effective DH, but I just can't see it
making any sense, unless they knew for sure that Papi would miss the rest of the season. Otherwise, renting him for a few months would potentially create more
long term harm than good.

I saw this note under my Yahoo Fantasy report for Mark Teixeira
Jul 7 Tony Massarotti, of the Boston Herald, reports the Boston Red Sox are closely monitoring Atlanta Braves 1B Mark Teixeira. Teixeira is approaching free agency and could be included in a deal before the trading deadline.
Every day is a new adventure!

Teixeira would be an interesting acquisition. He's such a good player, and would nicely fit in the DH spot while Papi is out. But, I wonder what they'd
do longer term? Youkilis has set defensive records at first, and hits well. Youk also plays third, but Lowell is not so bad over there. Would they be thinking
of not keeping Lowell moving forward, moving Youk back to third, and putting Teixera at first? Would they be thinking of including Youk in the deal?
Interesting topic. |

wallysgurl wrote: Well the Braves would be trading a gold glove first baseman. Tex brings a lot more to the table than Youk, sorry Yoooooouk fans. He is as good in the field (in fact better at the high scoop), provides more power and much more consistency throughout the full season. If they are serious about Tex then it would likely mean an end to Manny after this season. Maybe Youk moves to the OF or becomes trade bait in the offseason. This will be his second go around with arbitration and will likely move into the $8-10MM range which is a little expensive for a corner infielder with average power and a .275 hitter. Remember the Sox won a World Series with Millar at 1st who is far from a Gold Glove. As for expendable players, none of the "expendable" players listed above would get much more than a bucket of balls. Lugo is untradeable, Cora is good at what he does, Crisp will not net much and Casey is on his last legs. If they are looking to make a deal it will have to involve a Masterson, Moss, Lowrie, Bowden and/or Buchholz. Manny and Tek can't be traded w/o their approval. I would take Tex in a deal for Youk, Bowden and Moss and then sign him for 4-5 years at $15MM. Just me though.

I'd take him if you can get a long term deal for him. I have nothing against Youk, but a middle of the line-up that is Papi, Manny, Tex, and Lowell would
be nice and hopefully prevent the on again and off again offensive funks behind us for the most part.

Wallysgurl,
You are right about which positions you would think they might want to replace. But, presuming they are pondering Teixeira (I hate typing that name), you have to wonder. As far as I know, Mark T. is just a first baseman. Obviously, Youk is at first, and not a guy that we "need" to replace. So, if they are seriously considering Mark T., I wonder what they would plan to do with him? Other than short, the infield is in good shape! Keep in mind, Mark T. is not a backup player, so replacing Casey is not going to cut it. I doubt we'll end up with him, but it makes you wonder what they would consider doing with him if they did get him. Personally, I don't think they should trade Youk, but at least the scenario would make sense. But, I doubt they'd covet Mark T. enough to part ways with Youk. Which all adds up to the trade rumor mill being interesting to talk about, but without knowing what discussions are going on behind the scenes, it is all just fluff. |

Heard today that the Red Sox were taking a look at the White Sox' Juan Uribe... swapping for Alex Cora. What do y'all think?

Not sure I get this one. Cora was always so well respected by the Red Sox and seems to be a serviceable back up. No idea what the motivation here would be.

Cora's brother is a coach for the South Siders, and the Sox might be looking for a solution to Lugo being gone a while. That's my guess.

Boston.com has reported tonight that the RS have backed away from this deal. I couldn't understand either why they would do this.
"While the Red Sox examined whether to pursue White Sox shortstop Juan Uribe, major league sources indicate the team backed away from a possible deal to acquire him. The Red Sox really like the job done by Jed Lowrie and feel that Alex Cora can be an adequate backup to Lowrie until Julio Lugo returns to the seen sometime in mid-August. That's not to say the Sox won't consider another veteran shortstop if the fit and price is right." http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/ |

I remember reading somewhere a while back that Cora wasn't real happy with his playing time. Lowrie is ok, but his fielding isn't prime time IMHO.
