RemDawg Posts: 3125 07/02/08 10:25 PM Cape Cod Dawg	Tags : None This is downright ridiculous! Seemed like Hansen had made progress but he has now regressed. DelCarmen is no longer a sure thing. Aardsma has been decent. Papelbon is almost automatic. Oki is NOT Dokey this year. What would you do? What trades are out there as we are now in July? I do expect some roster moves before tomorrow's series in the Bronx, but suspect that may be Masterson and Clay switching places. Something's gotta give or the Rays can laugh all the way to the AS Break............or maybe beyond. Aardsma needs to see more time and maybe Manny DC needs some more time in RI in favor of a Martinez/Hansack/Pauley....................... tough call. If you look at each of these 5 losses, you can lay the blame on the bullpen in almost every case. The inability to hold leads (substantial ones at that) and the inability to come in and pitch at least an inning or two without giving up runs. Our offense is fine. Our starting pitching is ok. He is an embarassment at the plate and has carried it into the field--his c/s is one of the worst in baseball (actually it has been throughout his career) .186 . And, as some here love to say "He has great intangibles" - "A great handler of pitchers" If true then he is doing horribly with the pen now too. ..For me, the only good thing to come from this will be that Teflon teK is gonzo in a few months.

The Projo reports that there will not be a switch of Buchholtz for Masterson. "Both the Red Sox and PawSox are saying published reports that Clay Buchholz will be summoned from Pawtucket to start for the Red Sox on Saturday in New York are incorrect. Buchholz, they say, will stay with the PawSox and Justin Masterson will make his scheduled start against the Yankees." Rem Pup Posts: 186 07/04/08 8:18 AM	Good idea. Bulchhoz, because he has so much stuff some of which is nasty, should be back in the rotation. Masterson has done so well, Justin deserves an opportunity to stay in the bigs and get a look in the pen. He reminds us so much of DLowe, Justin could have great success in the pen. I think for the time being, Hansen, who has shown moments of brilliance, but has also been inconsistent and should go back to Pawtucket. Daniel Bard should be the next one to get a look in the pen.

If nothing else happens at least this will bring a fresh arm to the pen in a few weeks. IMO he's already a quality major league starter... but the bullpen move is probably a smart one with Buchholz pitching so well right now. Every day is a new adventure!

The last two games in Anaheim highlight just how little confidence Francona has in his bullpen, choosing to stay with his starters Saturday and Sunday rather than ask his bullpen for 6 outs. Bullpen's are fragile and when Okajima's "Cinderella touch" hit midnight, the balance of the bullpen unwound. Timlin's age made him a health risk and that risk has been realized. Delcarmen and Hansen simply have not turned the corner from promise to reality. When things go bad it is easier to point to the coaching staff but they are doing their job IMHO. Francona is between a rock and a hard place and for a guy who likes to extend his starters long as a course of in game tactics, having no reliable bridge to Papelbon is a huge issue. If a few of these guys hit stride, things will be OK, if not 2008 may be 2005 or worse yet a re-do of 2006. And if so the finger pointing will start all over the place, from the pitching coach to the manager and the media will eventual also turn on Man-Ram, because that is what they do. But the real issue will be that relievers with rare exception have short and unpredictable shelf lives. Good news is most have 3-5 lives.

Dawg in Training Posts: 550 07/21/08 5:42 PM Rem Pup	I am not all that disapointed in the bullpen @ California. The winning hit on Saturday was either a good piece of hitting or a lucky hit. Either way, you tip your cap and move on. Last night Wake was great till the guys got on in the 8th. Tough spot for MDC & he should get that done. But I dont blame either of those losses on the manager or the bp. This team is going to lose 65 games. That was 2 of them. The Angels are a VERY good team. In Boston we win 2 of those 3. And if we have a big Papi advantage. ....I still say Tampa will (is?) going to fade. The MFY's will get to second soon. We will win 2 of 3 in Seattle and end up with a 2-4 west coast trip. And be in first starting a big w/e series.

RemDawg Posts: 6905 07/27/08 3:16 PM RemDawg	It is notable to see where the RS BP ranks in the AL: 9th in BA, K/BB ratio and ERA. 10th in WHIP and OBP 11th in CS% (this is not Wakefield's influence these are straight BP stats and do not include indifference) The BP record is 16-16 in games determined with a reliever on the mound and this is largely because the RS BP has the second highest run support of any pen in the AL. The bullpen's of the Rays and NYY rank much higher in every one of these metrics except run support. Currently the RS record against potential playoff foes is 16-20 (MN, LAA, NYY & TB). (we haven't played the Chisox yet). The bullpen is going to have to turn this around or the RS may have trouble earning a Wild Card and even if they did, they would likely be 3 and out. Hansen looks hopeless, Delcarmen on and off, Timlin's age is an issue, Lopez looks like a LOOGY and Okajima's ERA covers up what his WHIP and OBA and OSLG% don't. The solution will need to come from within and Masterson alone won't be the fix. Hope for the best, prepare for the possibility of an October without the RS...

RemDawg Posts: 5014 07/28/08 8:55 AM Stat Dawg	The Red Sox bullpen is essentially the same as last year's that won it all, except it has one more excellent addition (Aardsma, though he's now on the DL). How is it the bullpen is a problem?? Remember 2004?? The pitching got hot down the stretch, and made numbers that were mediocre up to that point turn into a good bullpen. I'm not worried about the bullpen. Okajima has returned to his old self, Delcarmen is the same pitcher as last year, ditto Javier Lopez, Timlin hasn't lost it yet, and Papelbon is Papelbon. And an impressive Masterson has been thrown into the mix, and a solid Aardsma as well. Bullpens have hot and cold stretches. My prediction: a hot stretch for the bullpen, and people saying at the end of the year how great the pen was this year. No worries here. Every day is a new adventure!
