I figured since I had some friends there, I would ask here before hitting the various travel sites. I need some help. I'm getting married in October (11th,
to be precise) and my fiance and I are leaning toward our honeymoon being a few days in Boston and the rest of the week in Maine. Since I've been a member
here for a few years you can probably guess one or two places I'd love to go (and yes, I'm aware that there's no chance on this earth or any other
one to get tickets to playoff games, so we're planning on the park tour). I already know about the Duck tours and Fanueil Hall and the other things, but
I'm really looking to see what ideas anyone else can think of. Our interests are sports and history (me) and outdoors (Amy loves camping, hiking and the
like so we'd love to find a cabin in Maine)
Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

If you want to be on or near the ocean, there is a beautiful area in Southern Maine called Biddeford Pools. Here is a link to some rentals. http://www.cyberrentals.com/biddeford/s/7096/fa/find.squery
In the off-season, they should be relatively inexpensive. Biddeford is about an hour south of Freeport, where the LL Bean flagship store is. There are also many other charming little shops & restaurants in Freeport. Honestly I'm not a hiker - chick so I don't know about hiking trails but in Biddeford you can always walk on the beach. It's absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous. Hope this helps, congrats on your upcoming nuptuals, and let us know what you decide! |

Probably the most well known spot on the Maine coast is Acadia NP up in Bar Harbor. There is lots of hiking since it is a National Park and a lot of drop dead
gorgeous views. It is also in the middle of foliage season up there, so plan... NOW!
I tend to believe that coastal Maine really starts once you get above Brunswick where the coast become much more rocky. There are some cool lighthouses to visit (Pemaquid Point, Owls Head, Bass Harbor, and West Quoddy Head are some of my faves) and some nice small towns (Wiscasset, Boothbay Harbor, and Camden come to mind quickly) and lots of yummy greasy spots to eat (Reds Eats in Wiscasset and Wasses in Rockland). However, Portland has a plethora of good restaurants and plenty of hotels. If you really want to get away, look at one of the Islands off the coast with regular ferry service (Isle au Haut, Vinalhaven, North Haven, Isleboro, and Swans Island). You can also do Swans Island as a day trip from Acadia. Just remember that during the American revolution, Maine was a part of Mass and all the action was really in Boston and outside of there.

Looks like you'll be in New England for prime leaf-peeping
If you're a museum buff, do take in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. http://www.mfa.org/ On the other end of the spectrum, there's always the Ghosts and Gravestones Tour: http://www.ghostsandgravestones.com/boston.htm Walking the Freedom Trail is fun: http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/ Walk across the road from Fanueil Hall to the North End and pick an Italian Restaurant to eat in. Cibo is a good one, with reasonable prices. Close by, Harvard Square in Cambridge is a fun place to poke around in, with the best burgers around at Mr. Bartley's Hamburger Cottage. Driving North, Portsmouth NH is a nice little downtown area; you can take a whale watching cruise out of there or take a ride on a tugboat. http://www.portsmouthnh.com/ Continuing North, Ogunquit Maine has a small hike on the Marginal Way, which is right on the ocean. http://www.ogunquit.org/ I haven't been to Portland Maine lately, but have been told that the downtown area is really nice now, with lots of little shops and good restaurants. http://www.portlandmaine.com/ Joan |

I have been staying at the Beachmere Inn in Ogunquit for about 9 years now (sometimes a few times a year). IT is a nice place and off season prices are pretty good. In Boston, don't forget the Museum of Fine Arts and of course the Bull and Finch (aka Cheers) on Beason Street. Great food and cool atmosphere. |

You guys rule. Thanks for all the tips. Needless to say our ideas change on a daily basis, so if you have any other suggestions, feel free to let us know.
Right now a few days in Boston and the rest of the week in Maine is how it looks. Kate, your idea may be the winner for where to stay in Maine. Amy heard about
that from one of our friends, and loves the idea.

All great Ideas. We're going to be in Boston Monday- Thursday. Then off to Freeport for LL Bean and the outlets for a day, then to Bar Harbor until Monday.
And I'm marrying the greatest girl in the world. Last night she gave me the greatest surprise of my life. She's not a baseball fan (at all. She could
be in a room with Babe Ruth himself and not have a clue who he is), but she got some help from a guy she works with and landed tickets to game 4. I literally
cried. There was no way on this earth or any other that I would have ever guessed I'd be at Fenway Tuesday night.
