If my roster math is correcct, I think there's only room for 2 of the following 4 pitchers on the team once Beckett is back: Snyder, Timlin, Corey &
Aardsma. I've liked Corey since his stint last season, and in a sample of 1 Aardsma looked good yesterday. Can Timlin still pitch effectively at his age?
If the Sox don't think so they won't be sentimental, that's for sure (see Mirabelli). So at the end of the day, who stays and who goes?

Timlin of course, Corey has no options so looks he's on or gone. They might want to 'staple' Corey on to Coco's leg, as part of trade. Dont
know enough about Snyder's or Aardsma's status but the latter I think was signed to a minor league contact so the presumption is he has options. Snyder
is a tough one I think he has options, (he was out most of 2006) if not, traded, released?
If I were to bet right now ------ Timlin and Corey stay - Aardsma to Pawtucket and it's Snyder (options or not) gets attached to Coco's leg to sweeten deal. Please. |

I can't see that it will be Timlin....cuz once he goes he's gone...Not sure about Snyder's options. Right now until things shake out with Beckett
and Dice-K gets his early inning adrenaline rush under control I don't know that they will want to move anyone that they can get back. So my vote is Corey
and Aardsma go south for the start of the season. I thought they both looked good.

IMHO Snyder's secure because the RS could convert him to a 5 starter if the roof caves in completely and it just might. #1 has back problems is on the DL
as of tonight (Beckett) and #3's shoulder is in taters (Schill) and at best he is on the DL for half a year. In their hearts the RS FO thought things where
moving just a little fast for Clay and MLB hitters in ST aren't put up any argument. Lester still lacks conrtol and a nasty out pitch. Gammons man-crush
aside the kid is just another below the radar wanna-be who had a a very dramatic comeback from cancer.
Coco trades? Get real. The dude is worth far more here at this moment than he is in trade and the only thing we know for sure is Ellsbury is the starter because Coco was unable to compete with him in ST. Let's not over read Mirabelli. He came to camp with nothing in his tank. Considering the fact that Cash is a scrub, Belli had to be done. Bad health is different than "lost it". Timlin raised some eyebrows in the post season, when healthy he is cagey and unflappable and in a reliever that is everything. If Manny Delcarmen had Timlin's head he'd be Papelbon. The guy will flame out before he's DFA'ed or traded for a bag of dirty balls. I tend to get dialed in here with Sue. Keep the guys with no options, keep the vets and watch April and the total team as well as the bullpen evolve. If the team thinks it has 5 starters and Schill as a 2nd half comeback, Tavarez is the most likely trade. There is some recent resume in his case and if the RS want to eat a few bucks and take promising but not can't miss AA talent in return that is a deal that will get done. |

I sooo agree! I think we may have a monster year offensively and if we do it will be one of those years that the offense helps to carry the pitching staff...looks like they might welcome that help. Very impressed with Corey. Aardsma looks pretty good, too. Never liked Snyder. Time to put Geezer Timlin out to pasture. Problem solved.

First of all, you say only 2 of the 4 can stay once Beckett is added back. Not sure what you mean by 2 of the 4? Beckett is big in Boston, but he only takes
up one place on the roster.
The short answer is that whoever can be sent to Pawtucket goes there to make room on the roster. Why, because it is too early in the season to lose a pitcher all together, and all of them are looking pretty good right now. Slightly longer answer (and what could happen later in the season)... It is a tough cal this early on. I guarantee they will NOT bump Timlin this early in the season. He has been a rock for them, and a reliable playoff performer. He could be cut loose farther down the road based on health or performance, but not this early on. After Timlin, you know Papelbon, Okajima, and Delcarmen are all safe. Lopez is not a guarantee, but he's safe because they like him as a lefty specialist for one or two batters. That leaves Aardsma, Corey, Snyder, and Tavares. Snyder and Tavares both provide long relief and could be used as a spot starter. For now, they need both. But, depending on how things play out, that could change. If Colon is added to the roster, and Schilling gets better, and Buchholz is doing well, then they'll have a bit of a surplus of starters/long relief, and I bet one of those guys goes - the one struggling the most. Aardsma or Corey are likely candidates for making room for Beckett - depending on contract status. They both will stick or get cut later on depending on how they do - ala Delcarmen. Good question. Now if Colon comes back, I think Buchholz goes down - he has options for Pawtucket, and could use a little more work. http://rationalsoxfan.blogspot.com/ |

Snyder DFA Not the move I might have guessed. I expected it to be Lopez or possible Aardsma (though I think he has shown promise) Really have pulled for Snyder since he arrived. Not so sure it sounds like he would accept a AAA assignment should he clear waivers. I suspect he gets picked up by someone. Shame he doesn't get to enjoy the Ring Ceremony on Tuesday.............

That surprises me a little bit. But I guess with Tavarez in the pen as well, you don't need two long relievers.

Yes, I was confused pre-coffee this morning. So I still say Lopez stays, and I have no idea which of the other 2 will last, although they way they have been
used, Corey seems higher up on the depth chart....but of course he imploded yesterday. Either way, doesn't affect the makeup of the team too much.

I'm guessing Corey pitched himself off the team last night. But the bigger issue is the bullpen overall -- outside of Paps & Oki they have been awful.
Hopefully this will change soon.

I think you're right about Corey. But, maybe if the starting pitchers could go more than 4 innings the bullpen wouldn't have to be working so early in
the game.

Looked like a subpar showing by the bullpen once again. Ouch but the bats were alive which was excellent. Did anyone think we'd be so excited about Timlinz

Half the bullpen was sub-par. And actually, Delcarmen had a great outing. He made one bad pitch that was hit out. Sometimes you get away with bad pitches,
sometimes you don't.
So, 3 of the 4 that appeared in the game did a great job. And then there was Tavarez...

Delcarmen had a great outing. I don't care what the excuse is, giving up HRs does not equal "great outings" in my book. Delcarmen has generally been lousy at best all year, including last night.

I'm afraid I have to agree with yaztheman that it was not a "great". However, I would not say he had a "terrible" outing, nor would I
say he has been "lousy all year". A starter going 7+ innings who gives up a solo homer may be having a great day. But a guy coming in for an inning
and giving up a homer is not having a great day.
But, he did not have a terrible day. He gave up a single, then got out of the 6th 1-2-3. In the 7th he got a ground out, a home run, and a ground out. So, he gave us 1 2/3 innings giving up one run. Not a bad outing, but not great. Need to keep guys like Ordonez in the park. He's only given up 8 hr's in in career, but 2 already in April. So, he needs to be careful. He is showing talent, but not consistently enough yet this year for me. His ERA is not bad, but the gran slam he gave up in Becket's start only cost him 1 earned run - the rest went to Beckett. So stats can be deceiving. Bottom line - he has been okay, but spotty. Not quite the reliable guy we want just yet. But, I don't want to get rid of him. He's done better than every other middle reliever so far (Oki and Paps being closing guys). |
