I always knew Paps had the education of a town cop, but Mariano Rivera?!? Did Paps forget about his shoulder flying out of its socket 16 months ago....? To basically win the World Series for us as a terrific closer...look at what he's done for us and when you think of Closers everybody agrees the two best in the game are Mo and Jonathan Papelbon. Also putting it this way; The White Sox Closer in Bobby Jenks who is nowhere near as good as Pap made 550,000 last season. If we're going to be paying Schilling all of this money to basically ride the pine and never play again and I will repeat what I've said since his "injury" was reported that he will never play again. then why can't the Sox throw some money at him....15 million a year I don't think anybody should get that yet alone a closer...but he's only targeting 900,000...so I can see him being pumped to a few million a year.... So alvigneau and TheMalzone let me disagree 100% with you....he's not asking for a ton of money nor is he going to hold out but let's be honest...he should be making more than he is making now and his whhhhhhhhaaaaambulance is way out of line. ~Chaggy

But concerning, "he's not asking for a ton of money" - How would you know that? How would anyone know that? He was throwing out Mariano's name like they were practically equals. Right then and there it sounds like he is smelling more then Jenks money. He wasn't bringing up Jenks name at all. The name Mariano Rivera should have never even come up though. I think Mr Rivera (the first ballot HOF'er), might even disagree with Mr Pabelbons personal assessment of himself, and quite frankly some of the veterans on the Boston Red Sox may too. Does this mean Carlos Diaz of the Rays is entitled to Manny type money because he had one ( 1 ) great year too? So there in o confusion, the actual Idiotic part was bringing in his 'family', his financially situation, his B S 'obligation' to baseball, in addition to literally demanding 'respect' from the ball club to the publics / fans attention. Papelbon is never going to be a Rhodes Scholar...can you spell redneck? 3. Traditionally guys like Youk, Papelbon and Ellsbury do their time early on in an organization and if they have great seasons they seem grossly underpaid compared to their teammates prior to getting to the point contractually where they are making decent $$. That is the way of baseball, basketball professional sports in general so be it. That said occasionally they blow out an arm, have a permanent injury and it is the end of the road for them. In my mind they are entertainers and I don't care ultimately if they have a good career what they make, I don't care what Tom Hanks grosses when he does a movie. I am entertained and have been blessed with getting to see my favorite team win 2 WS in the past 4 years. Allelujiah !!! 4. I'd rather see him Pitch than talk. Yeah Shutup and pitch...for all the loudmouth comments about Curt at least he has intelligent stuff coming out his mouth. 5. You should have sold the WS ball that you pocketed instead of letting your woof woof tear it up. Sorry to ask this--did we just win ANOTHER World Series?

Ok I thought I missed something but I didn't...he pitched in as many games in 07 as he did in 2006....he had 35 saves in 06 and 37 in 07...he actually went 4-2 in '06 instead of the 1-3 that he went in '07. his era was .92 in 2006 while in 2007 he had a 1.85 era....And he threw over 100 more pitches in 2006 than 2007 while allowing less walks than in '07. Sure he didn't pitch after September 1st in '06 but that wasn't his fault that he was overused...but even with that fact he was still a great cloesr so '07 wasn't his first single good season EVER as a closer this was his second straight good season. ~Chaggy

Wow...sure he doesn't have a Harvard education but to talk about him not being intelligent isn't right...let's be honest here...he has to be somewhat smart otherwise he woudln't knwo how to control a ball and it takes a ton of skill to be able to throw a ball that fast and to be that accurate....so yes you have to think to throw a ball 98 miles an hour (aside): It's about time we get a great debate going on it's been a long time...and thankfully we all (us in the debate now) know eachother and respect eachother so we can go after eachother like this.... ~Chaggy

The teams hold the power for the first few years of players careers and can obviously pay very little compared to what they pay veterans. Recently some high profile young players have been complaining about how it's unfair/unjust. Funny that they won't be saying how unfair or unjust their salaries are once they hit arbitration and free agency. Sorry guys, play by the rules your 'union' agreed to now because you certainly won't worry about using those rules in the future when they're advantageous to you.

Can you imagine if these young guys were making insane money in their second or third year being in the majors? Veterans salaries would then go up and it'd be more out of control than it is now. No one would be able to go to the ballpark because tickets etc would be so expensive.

Otherwise, they should pay Pap his minimum + no more than a $200,000 bonus, as pitchers are always too much of a risk. The precedent which some big early contract would have on other players like Pedroia, Bulchoz, Lester etc. is a proposition I'd like the Red Sox to avoid. If these young players who have not met their option and arbitration year requirement want the rules changed, they should go to Donald Fehr and the MLB's Ass'n and asked that be placed on the next CBA agenda.

This makes sense yes. What the Mets did with David Wright and Jose Reyes was brilliant. Paps has to prove to me that his shoulder isn't going to fly over the back stop like it did in 2006. If he remains healthy this year, an argument can be made. Until then, I will hold my breath before every violent pitch is thrown.

Reading today that he is probably not interested in signing a long term deal next year, this guy is sounding more like Asante Samuel by the day. This is making 100X what the average person makes and will move into 1000x what the average person make next year and he will continue to whine. Comparing himself to Mo Rivera is foolish, talk to us when you have gotten it done for 10+ years and have 4 rings. As for someone mentioning Jenks getting paid $550k and not being nearly as good, look at the numbers first. Jenks is as good as the Dancing Dope of Fenway and has the numbers to back it up. I am of the opinion that Theo should continue his plans with the Minor League growth and be prepared to replace these big mouth dopes when the time comes for free agency. This guy is already on pace to be asking for $20M per year within the next couple of years. I like him as a player, but the stupid things he says and does outside the lines I can do without.
