Does anyone know what that was about? That was hilarious. "It was an f*ing pop out. What do you want me to do about it?" Beckett is the man!

It was unprofessional on both sides of it to be that stupid/Retarted in a spring training game IMO.

The story, per AP:
"Beckett thought Howard took too long to admire his long fly ball to center that was knocked down by the wind and caught in front of the warning track. Beckett yelled at Howard, but nothing happened during the inning. Beckett looked back into the Phillies dugout as he walked off the field following the sixth. After Howard ran out to his spot at first base, he threw his glove down, looked into Bostons dugout, talked back to Beckett and walked toward him. Beckett was restrained before he stepped back onto the field and no one threw any punches or shoves. 'Im about respecting the game. Even if it is a home run, I dont think its the right thing to do,' Beckett said. 'Its not like I wanted to fight the guy, but I wanted to make the point that you look like an idiot when you do that and its an out. It was my fault. I shouldve let it go. He didnt do that last year when he was hitting a bunch of homers. I guess one season changes you.'" The story went on to say Howard claimed he lost the flight of the ball and was simply trying to figure out where it was. Looks like just a big misunderstanding more than anything. And anyone who watched the game should realize, if they hadn't before, that this pretty well illustrates just what Josh Beckett is all about. He is a ferocious competitor, even in a "meaningless" spring training game. Did you see his reaction to the double play that ended an inning? If he loses, he's going to take it personally. This is the sort of guy you love to have on your side, and you hate when he's a member of the opposition. |

Yeah. Evidently there was a story floating around that last year, after a loss, Beckett kicked over a water cooler in the clubhouse in frustration and accidently soaked the principal owner of the Marlins.
In anycase, his intensity is much needed. He's not some beligerant jerk like Dewon Brazelbon that tries to pick fights at the drop of a hat. He's just a passionate guy that doesn't hold himself back when he needs to express himself. |

Until he does a Kevin Brown or a Tavarez and hurts himself..... or gets suspended. These are grown men they should act like it.

I don't mind a guy who gets intense and shouts encouragement at his teammates after they make a great play, or exchanges words with his opponents. Punching a wall is another matter, but I've never heard of Beckett going that far. It looks to me that his emotional makeup was a big reason why he won the WS MVP award. He's a fire-breather, and he's going to fight for his team as long and as hard as he possibly can.

I'd rather have a guy who actually shows that he cares about the games than someone who just comes in, does his job, and goes home.
Intensity is something that can bring a team together, and guys like Beckett can be good clubhouse prescences. They keep guys in the game, make sure they're paying attention, and have respect and love for the game. This just makes me like the guy even more. |

I don't mind intensity, but I agree with the poster who said that if he were on the MFY, we'd call him a hothead. That being said, I think as long as you don't get your team in trouble with your actions, a little intensity is fine.

So, batters should stop and figure out where the ball is going before they run...I must have been absent when they taught that one in Little League. |

Quote: Not the best way to make it on base... That is a pretty weak excuse for doing a home run trot on a fly ball to center. Is this making a big thing out of nothing b/c everyone can't wait for the actual season to start? |

I'd say yes, Maxdawg. We're grasping at straws, but the meaningful games start in 5 days. Woo hoo!!

To those who say that if Beckett was in the other dugout that his actions would be viewed in a very different light are right on. If he is going to get his nose in a joint every time an opposing batter "pimps it up" it probably won't work to his advantage in the long run.
It does however, as others point out also highlights a fierce competetive drive, which I think is unquestioned about Beckett. Only the ability to pitch 200 plus innings hold him back at this point from assuming TRUE ace status. All that said, he by far had the best spring and based on that work he and not Schilling is the number 1 starter on this team, regardless of who is being given the ball for the opener. That may change in the weeks ahead but Beckett had a great ST! |

So now we know that between Beckett, Tavarez, and Trot, many water coolers will meet an untimely demise. I should go buy stock in Coleman.

Yeah the phillydawg here was wondering what the heck was going on too.....I thought it was weird to see Howard throw down his glove and head towards Sox dugout (not too bright really) because Howard is not a hot head etc and then I saw Beckett with fire in his eyes and flames coming out of his mouth---intensity yes but .....I did think it was smart that Sox players got in front of him really....and gang maybe they were just practicing for when the gun goes off for the season. But I too hope Beckett's temper does not cause him some problems like a broken hand or foot---- Jim Round II versus Phils this weekend and then again Round III in June -----sounds like a Rocky fight LOL |

If Beckett needs to beat on water receptacles this season, can the Red Sox send him up here and turn him loose on our town's so-called water filtration system? The tap water up here is so bad even the dog hates it, and we're paying an arm and a leg for it.

Quote: Lisa nothing compares to City of Philadelphia tap water..... in chemistry labs in college we had to use distilled water to rinse things as "tap" water would screw up experiments if glassware was washed in it. I stil remember in Organic lab we all got unknown to find out what it was.....most of us came up with Ag (silver) as a positive --why--we had rinsed glassware with hot Philly water and it through off test--- the unknown and only 2 people got it----distilled water!
