Guess he's still not 100%...which is a major cause of concern for the 2006 season. It's still early, but...

That does not sound promising.

Well, if he can't go, and if we still have extra starting pitchers, I think I'd vote for Papelbon as the closer.

This is not good. I think he is done, at this point the club won't pick up his option for 07.

Well I hope that Hansen gets his arm ready we may need him sooner than we know.

Well without Foulke we never win in '04, so if he's done (and it's a bit premature to say that), he was still worth every penny in my book.

I hope that this is just further treatment for the surgery he got last year.
I do hope Foulke will be the f/t closer and effective in '06, but if not, the bullpen is much better prepared to deal with him out. Papelbon as the closer and they can bring up (or break camp w/) Hansen in a set up role. Fingers crossed for Foulke's health, he was HUGE in '04, especially the playoffs, he took it to another level. |

I do not know exactly what they did to Foulks knees but if it was cartillage that doesn't grow back and the injections could be to help with the soreness of bone rubbing on bone which the cartilage normally cushions.

If it isn't an anti inflammatory steroid the I have to guess it is something to keep the joint lubricated.
--------------------Quote------------------------------ Injectable fluids known as hyalens may replace or supplement lost synovial fluid. These treatments are very popular for those suffering from osteoarthritis in the knee. A popular treatment, the "Synvisc" injection, is detailed in a report on this site. www.knee1.com/care/condition20.cfm/61 I know lots of beaten up tennis players who get this done and I believe it is two or three weeks of injections...yes actually here is the info.... "Detailed Description Procedure A doctor administers viscosupplementation through a series of three weekly injections. Before each injection, your doctor will assess the position of your patella and determine the injection site." I would guess this might be what he has going on. I actually played a match today with someone who had this done and they haven't had a problem since the injections. SOoooooo maybe it isn't as bad as we think, if it is this after all |

Keith Foulke, who has yet to progress to facing hitters, has been undergoing two weeks of "injections" to his knees.
Foulke had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in July and on his right knee after last season. Neither the Red Sox nor agent Dan Horwitz would say what it was that was being injected into Foulke's knees, though it's not cortisone. "He'll be held back while this process is going on, but once it's over he should be fine," GM Theo Epstein said. If the Red Sox were really that optimistic, they probably would have mentioned the injections before now. Foulke did throw off flat ground for about 10 minutes today and showed decent velocity. Until today, the reports on him this spring had been entirely positive. |

Thanks, Sue, that's interesting info.
I wonder if these are the same injections Randy Johnson has had? |

Very interesting, Sue. Still sounds promising. My less plausible thought was just some temporary localized pain control. It is cold virus season, and whenever I get a virus it goes straight for my weakest joints (in my case left shoulder and back). I'm not worried about Foulke yet. :)

My friend that had this done has no cartilage in one knee. She had surgery years ago and a recent MRI showed bone on bone so she went with the injections.
Hope he is doing okay. Sue |

It is apparent that Foulke's knees are degenerative. He has pitched at a high level with issues in the past, so I am not flipping out, plus the RS will feel their way through this in the worst case scenario and probably leave Papelbon where he belongs with an abundance of starters on the payroll, in the bullpen.
2006 is no where near as dependent on Keith as last year was because this year the RS FINALLY addressed the bullpen and have enough depth that a single failure point won't sink it. |

Marc or other dawgs, wasn't Papelbon a closer in college? I seem to remember someone saying that.

Yes, Papelbon was a closer in college. However, in his minor league stint with the Red Sox, they have been grooming him as a starter. I'm sure he could work as a closer if he had to, but I'd hate to see him try to make the change back again after all that effort. Just MHO.

Derek Lowe did both jobs and had success in each role. It can happen.

Quote:While the sample sets are small, Jonathan has enjoyed more success at in MLB as a reliever than he did as a starter. He has starter stuff but he is not a can't miss starter but probably is a can't miss reliever. It is normal development path historically so I really don't see the big deal, aside from the fact that the RS have sold him as a starter before they had 7 starters counting him. |

There is a difference, though, between easing your way into the major leagues as a middle-innings reliever and taking over the role of closer.

Let's not get too crazy, it's still more than a month till OD. Foulke may be ready or not. As for Papelbon as the closer, I would prefer they not go that route. Why put him there for a few weeks or months then put him into middle innings reliever? Hansen is the closer of the future, not Papelbon. Timlin can close for a month or two if needed, plus Tavarez is there.
