what about trading Boom-ah for Dave Roberts & letting Johnny walk? That would free up a lot of $$.

I know we all love Dave Roberts, but do we want to see him starting in CF everyday? Don't think he can do the job over the course of a season and contribute 150+ games a year like Jonny.

just a thought. Why Boomer signed w/ the Sox (and for two years) in the first place is beyond me.
Can the Sox get equal value back? If the Padres know he wants to play there, what will the Pads give up when they have the upper hand? And Boomer doesn't strike me as the good soldier that will keep playing and giving his all if he doesn't get his way. I could see a pull the bags off the plane incident somewhere in California in Boomer's future if they don't get the deal done. |

Quote: Agents. They always advise their clients to take the best monetary offer on the table. And why not? They get a cut of the paycheck. They don't get a cut of the player's happiness or comfort. If Antartica offered Wells more money, he would've gone there...and 1 year later, he'd be grousing about it. |

I'm glad to see Wells go, although its certainly no surprise he wants to leave.
Goodbye Wells, hello Papelbon! |

I think the RS understand the mentality of Boombino, but the deal has to be good each way, I am sure Wells understands that too. I am glad we had him this year, we would have been in trouble without him considering all the injuries, he pitched very well in Fenway. The guy is 43 and overweight. He is prone to back and knee injuries while I enjoyed having him in a RS uni this season, I am okay with him going. He is a Cali boy and used to what he's used to. Boomer wants to be surfing on his off days and not off cape cod.

after getting a healthy Boomer for one year, it might be best to move him anyway. What are the chances he goes another year w/o missing any time (except MLB enforced suspensions)?
Will he go to any So Cal team? |

-TheKnuckler Oh? And whose starting spot was he going to take?? Not Clement, Schilling, Wakefield, or Arroyo's! |

I hate these trade demands. It's times like this I wish we could turn back the clock to when players had absolutely no say over where they played.
I say keep him and stick him in the bullpen. He oughtta love that! |

I didn't think this was such a surprising revelation... I am certainly not the first person suggest this. With Wells back, I believe Papelbon would have gotten a chance to compete for a spot in the rotation in ST and, if impressive, would force Arroyo to the pen.

___________________________________________ why not arroyo's spot? I'd much rather have Papelbon starting than Arroyo. Then again, I'd rather not have clement here either. |

Isn't it interesting that the Boston media reports Wells requesting a trade and no one here has a problem with the report... however, people bash the media & front office when it's reported that Manny requested a trade because no one heard it directly from Manny?

I totally agree about Clement, Captainliteral... unfortunately, he's under contract and will get his 32 or so starts next year.
As far as Arroyo goes, for the last couple years, he is seen as the guy who would switch to the pen, and he never ends up there. When he's on he's a great pitcher, and I think the Red Sox want him to stay in the rotation. That's just my take on it. I just don't believe Papelbon would have taken the youngest effective starter's place. |

-ClemesFriedChicken I totally agree. Too bad it will never be like that again. These guys get paid big money to play a game... then on top of that they can even often control where they play!! (No wonder there's never any pitching at Coors... pitchers refuse to play there.) |

Quote: Arroyo was the de facto "youngest most effective starter" by proxy of who was in the starting 5 this year. To date, he hasn't ended up in the pen because they haven't had many healthy options in the rotation. If there are better options in '06 (in the form of Papelbon and another starting arm via trade or FA) you will see Arroyo as a guy who will be looked at as an option to sure up a shaky pen. |

Quote:Sorry but David did not use an agent this go around. He and his wife worked the deal ala Schill's extension. The Padres dragged their feet so Team Wells went looking. He did the deal because he had did not comprehend the lack of privacy, wanted win one more WS ring and since the NYY were not interested in him. When the Wells' accepted the RS deal the Padres still had not made an offer. Padres claim they were just tardy and would have extended David an offer. He found the lifestyle in Boston quite difficult, that much is on the public record. Whether his request reflects his take on our prospects, that would be speculation. |

Bronson was a better starter than Wakefield last year, and you think he'd get put in the bullpen??? Uh uh. He was put in the bullpen for the playoffs because they only needed 4 starters for the playoffs, and the other four starters either had no bullpen experience (Clement), were too old to try to have pitch with limited warm-ups (Wells), or were too experienced with playoff starting (Schilling, Wakefield, Wells). Arroyo will start next year if they go through arbitration with him. In my mind that's the only question... do they offer arbitration or do they think he'll win too much $$ and try to replace him. |
