Send him up here, too. The [CENSORED]s at the power company want to increase their already atrocious rates.

Per Gordon Edes
For the second straight day, the Red Sox were involved in a bench-clearing incident in a spring training game. In the top of the eighth, Sox reliever Julian Tavarez threw a punch at Devil Rays outfielder Joey Gathright after he slid into home plate (with Tavarez covering). Tavarez connected with a right to Gathright's chin. After having hit a batter, enduring an error behind him and committing another himself in the inning, Tavarez was already irritated at the time of the incident. Heres how it went down ... After the two fielding mistakes by the Sox, Tavarezs first pitch to Julio Lugo was high and tight. With Gathright already on second base, Lugo went on to get a hit, but got caught between first and second. Recognizing they had Lugo in a pickle, Sox catcher Ken Huckaby ran out toward him while keeping an eye on Gathright, who had moved to third and was partway down the third base line. Huckaby threw to infielder Zach Borowiak to try to nab Lugo. When he did, Gathright broke to the plate, forcing Tavarez to cover home. Borowiak threw to Tavarez, Gathright slid, and Tavarez tagged him (Tavarez might have gotten spiked). Tavarez then connected with a punch, and players rushed the field. Jonathan Papelbon came running out from the bullpen, and he and Papa Jack pulled Gathright out of the scrum. Devil Rays outfielder Carl Crawford and Gathright were gesturing toward the Sox dugout, but there were no other incidents (though we believe Tavarez was yelling from the dugout). In the bottom of the eighth, newly acquired Red Sox first baseman Hee-Seop Choi was plunked by Rays pitcher Wayne Franklin, and the umps warned both sides. The Red Sox and Devil Rays, of course, have a history of bench-clearing incidents. More details and quotes to come ... |

That boy done lost his damn mind. What is wrong with him? There's already enough bad blood between these teams, do we really need to punch their outfielders in March? And we already traded our plunking machine. I'm all for aggression and firey play, but this is moronic. Even if he did get spiked, just call him a @#$% and gesture that you're going to hit him in the head with a fastball. The potential aerobic workout of having the players sprint toward the field is not great enough to justify throwing punches in spring training.

Maybe it's wrong to enjoy things like this, but I do. I love the bad blood between Boston and TB.
Hopefully Tavarez can keep those fists away from the dugout wall this year. With Beckett's arrogance (I mean that in a good way) and Tavarez's craziness (also in a good way), we might see quite a few scrums this year. IMO, every team should have at least one crazy pitcher. Just to keep the opposing batters from getting too comfortable in there. |

I said Tavarez was a psychopath the day we signed him. The guy can't handle any sort of failure and acts like a child. He needs to be reigned in before he causes this team and MLB any more embarassment. Sheesh its one thing to hit someone with a pitch, but a right hook?

Who knows maybe you are right that the guy is nuts, but spikes are spikes. Probably greater provocation than A-Rod yapping at Tek and clearly the same thing that made Carlton Fisk bury his had (with a baseball in it) into Lou Pinella's grill in the famous 1976 rumble at Yankee Stadium that ended with Bill Lee's shoulder trashed and his career changed for ever more!
Edit : I forgot to add IF Tavarez did get spiked and just wasn't having a temper tantrum using Joey's grill to vent his anger with a bad inning. The RS are going to get a rep for being Bad Boys... |

No spikes. the AP has a pretty good blow by blow.
AP... Gathright was sliding into home in the eighth inning when he was tagged out by the often-hot tempered Tavarez, who stepped on the outfielder's right arm. Gathright, still on the ground, then used his left forearm to push Tavarez's left knee. Before Gathright got up, Tavarez struck a blow in the area of Gathright's left jaw, and players flocked in from the benches and bullpens. No other players appeared to throw punches, and order was restored after a few minutes. Full AP story |

This man is insane! No more details than was was already covered in this thread on SI.
Think the Sox had any kind of clause in his contract to protect themselves against something like this? How long of a suspension is Tavarez going to get? Over/under at ten? |

Eff Taverez. Even if he did get spiked that's bush league BS. I hope he never throws another pitch for the Sox.

Way under 10. For as insane as you think this is even the AP article with limited detail makes some sense out of the incident, from both players points of view.
Gathright pushes Taveraz knee because he accidental got stepped on. Whether Tavarez even is aware he stepped on Gathright is questionable but somebody is pushing on his knee (ask Boomer or Foulke about the value of a knee to a pitcher). So Taverez swats the guy doing it in the kisser. Heck if this was Curt, it would be Joey's fault for getting his face in the way of Schill's fist. |

I really think this is good stuff for the Red Sox. Why?
What was the "defining moment" of the World Championship season? It wasn't a Big Papi home run, or Pedro coming through in the clutch. It was a fight, a big fight. Crazy as it seems, stuff like this helps build chemistry and camaraderie among players on a team. It's a good thing we're taking care of it early. |

Wait. I need Tavares. Hey, Tavares, wanna help me get my tickets out of your employer. I could use the help. Nothing else is working.
Now, back to topic. This guy is crazy, spikes or no spikes. It is ST for heaven's sakes. Be calm, my children, be calm. I think Tavares just sealed his fate with the Boston Red Sox. At least one can hope. Peggy, the disgruntled. |

He didn't throw a punch at Gathright! He was "delivering some information"! Just ask Trot!
So we've gone from "rock stars" and "idiots" to "thugs." Beautiful. I hope we also have some "athletes." Lisa |

Julian Tavarez is a Punk with a capital P.
I was at the game today and had a very good view of the swipe he took at Gaithright and it wasn't a swat. He pulled his arm back and punched him right in the jaw to the jaw-dropping amazement of the fans in the stands. I sit on the first base side of the plate so I don't know if there were spikes (doesn't look like it from the pictures) or if Gaithright pushed his knee but I still think the punch was uncalled for. Crawford was on deck and he was very hot under the collar also. It's amazing no other punches were thrown because both benches were out there. Of course, it was the 8th inning so there was no Trot or Tek in the dugout any more. The next inning the D'Rays pitcher plunked Choi square in the back but then it was Choi who walked in the run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th to win the game. It was a very sloppy game on both sides but the fans who stayed past the 7th inning were rewarded with some exciting baseball. I don't have a huge problem with plunking a player once in a while but I'm not a fan of punching a guy for no reason and I hope Tavarez is severely fined or suspended. I didn't like this signing when it happened and now I like it even less. |

I think the fans are going to make much more of this than the players. More details from the Associated Press:
FORT MYERS, Fla. The Red Sox are ready for the opening bell.         One week before their first regular-season game, excitable reliever Julian Tavarez punched Tampa Bay outfielder Joey Gathright lightly in the jaw Monday during a play at home plate Monday, the latest flareup between the teams.         Players ran from benches and bullpens but no injuries were reported as they clutched opponents and tried to keep their teammates from going after the other side....         In Bostons 12-11 win, which ended when Hee-Seop Choi walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Gathright raced home while Julio Lugo was caught in a rundown between first and second in the eighth. Second baseman Zach Borowiak threw to Tavarez, who tagged Gathright out as the outfielder slid.         Gathright said Tavarez stood on his right forearm after the tag. Tavarez agreed but said he wanted to beat Gathright to the punch.         I saw him try to get up and I wasnt going to let him throw a punch at me right away, said Tavarez, who threw a second punch on the top of Gathrights head. You hear about whoever throws the first punch gets the win. Thats what happened.         In the Devil Rays clubhouse, Gathright rolled up his right sleeve to show a small scratch on his right forearm. He said he had pushed Tavarezs left knee to try to free his arm. But Tavarez drew his fist back with Gathrights right knee and hand still on the ground.         It just kind of grazed the jaw, Gathright said.         Both players were calm after the game.         Gathright said well forget about it tomorrow. Tavarez said, I dont know if I hit him good or not. I just wish that wouldve never happened.         Tampa Bay designated hitter Jonny Gomes said he hopes no bad blood remains between the teams when they play April 18 in Boston.         I hope not, he said. but were grown men out here and you never know whos holding a grudge.         In the bottom of the eighth, Choi was hit by a pitch by Wayne Franklin, but Red Sox manager Terry Francona said it didnt appear to be intentional. Still, both benches were warned.         The Red Sox and Devil Rays have been involved in several brawls. Tavarez is in his first season with Boston....         On Monday he punched Gathright, a move he said he regretted.         Im not a fighting guy, Tavarez said, I get along with my teammates and everybody, but when youre on the field, you know, things happen.         Gathright said he couldnt do much with Tavarez standing on his arm.         I was like, Get off my arm, and he wouldnt move, Gathright said. Its spring training and hes known for something, so nobody really cares. I could care less. Ill get over this. Hopefully, everybody else does.         |

Quote: 1. Believe it or not I read the same article 2. This guy comes with a laundry list of problems. The fans did not make up his history. Bye Tavares. Edit: Quote: Winning a few games would have given me a little more to look forward to. Peggy |
