Assuming all are healthy
Schilling- Needs to be a starter Beckett -See Curt Clement-See Beckett Wells-See Clement So that leaves Wake- most likely will be a starter Arroyo Papelbon I hope this whole wells thing is to gather interest from another team because arroyo led this team last year in quality starts he deserves to be a starter |

If Wells has sincerely pulled his trade request and this isn't a media protection blanket...
Then does that mean that both Arroyo and Clement are now trade fodder to pick up something that we obviously don't need yet... Clemens is either retiring or he will be an Astro....Would have been nice to see a farewell tour through Boston but there just isn't any room in this rotation. Especially for another 40 something (or close to it) pitcher. |

From the Globe:
But assuming Wells is healthy -- ''My knee is still hurting, I'm not getting any younger, my arm feels great and the rest of me is subpar" was his self-assessment -- it appears more likely that the Sox will hold onto Wells while fielding offers for Matt Clement and perhaps Bronson Arroyo. Ideally, this is the rotation the Sox would like to open the season with: Curt Schilling, Wells, Josh Beckett, Tim Wakefield, and Jonathan Papelbon. In that scenario, Arroyo goes to the pen as a swingman, and Clement is pitching in another uniform. ------------------------------------------------------ Looks like the Red Sox really want Papelbon to start. I agree, and hope he gets 30 starts this year, but with so many questions on the staff, hard to say if he will. |

Papelbon probably will not start, and as of now it looks more and more he will be headed to AAA - and start there. Maybe that's what they meant!

I highly doubt he will be in AAA this year he was lights out outta the Bullpen last year so if anything i think a BP move would be best

Paps will not be in AAA. Tito has made that clear.

I heard him say it in an interview on EEI. He said he would like for him to start but that may not be able to happen, and if he can't, he will be a very valuable member of the bullpen.

I agree that Paplebon will probably not be headed to AAA ball. I think he showed that he is a reliable arm either in the rotation or in the bullpen. I think he has nothing to prove in AAA ball. JMO

With the depth in the BP as well as the SP's they will have to be creative to find a spot for Papelbon IMO.

Can anyone name 10 pitchers who are more worthy of a roster slot than Paplebon?

"Worthy" in this case probably translates into "who has the big salary?"
That said, Papelbon will probably be in the bullpen to start the year. But these things often have a way of sorting themselves out. |

Sp's in no particular order
Arroyo Wakefield Clement Beckett Schilling Wells RP's in no order Foulke Tavarez Riske Timlin Seanez total there is 11 Looking at the above experience unless someone is traded I think that Papelbon is on the bubble to make the 25 man Roster JMO Phil |

I'd take Paplebon over Saenez any day of the week.

Riske could be dumped...though with the history, age, and odds of our staff i think one of the guys will start the season on the DL (foulke) and the situation will work itself out.
Also, Clemens is almost 43 to the poster who wasnt sure if he was 40 yet |

Riske has a career ERA of 3.53 and is only 29, he's the last guy out of that group I'd dump.
I agree that odds are someone will begin the year on the DL. Lots of oldies on the pitching staff. |

Actually let me take your list and add a few:
Arroyo Wakefield Clement Beckett Schilling Wells RP's in no order Foulke Tavarez Riske Timlin Seanez DiNardo Vermilyea (rule 5 who must be on the roster) That's 13, without counting Papelbon or Delcarmen. I don't think its realistic to rule out Papelbon starting the season in AAA just because you wouldn't like it. As far as Tito's decision, well its not really his call - its Theo's. Not sure if I remember him ever saying that anyway. |

I'd agree with you, except I point to the Adam Stern debacle as proof that the Sox love their rule 5 picks.
