After today's game Mike Lowell is hitting .174 against many pitchers who won't make the big league roster.

With the simplicity of this board, I'm sure there is no perceived difference between pitchers and hitters.

I would say that there is a difference between hitters and pitchers in ST. While I'm not "worried"...yet, hitters typically have better ST that pitchers. He obviously is still monkeying around with his swing. Hopefully he figures it out. I have noticed Youks has started a couple games at 3b this spring. I wouldn't be surprised if Lowell is toast and Youks is at 3b and Snow at 1b by the end of May. This is for another thread but if a SP is traded I would love to see a stub 1b prospie come this way especially if the afformentioned scenario plays out.

I'm concerned he may be done. Hitters are usually ahead of pitchers in ST, especially because they are hitting off many minor leaguers. But there are $9MM reasons why the Sox won't be too quick to dump him.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out that Lowell is done. He fell off the cliff last year and there was a reason we had to take him in the Lowell deal.

I don't think you hear of hitters trying to work on something during games, though that could happen (a hitter trying to pull a ball, a hitter trying to hit it to the opposite gap, etc.). My feeling is that Lowell isn't one who is trying to do anything other than hit the damn ball, and if he can't, that's a problem.

It is a funny game and lot's could happen, but it sure does not look good coming off of his 2005 performance.
He could be fiddling with his swing still, his 2005 would dictate that he should be. And the sample sets are still small but considering the $$$ the RS have committed to him and that the option would be Youk at third and JT Snow at 1st, it would sure make you feel more warm and fuzzy if he was crushing the ball. |

Nice link if a person is into playing fantasy baseball but I don't think Lowell is playing fantasy baseball the ones he can't hit are very real.

Did a little digging around on Lowell. Some relatively recent stats (which is what I believe fantasy baseball players use, so I suppose anyone can feel free to ignore them):
2001 Spring Training average: .230 2001 regular seaon average: .283 2002 Spring Training average: unavailable 2002 regular season average: .276 2003 Spring Training average: .267 2003 regular season average: .276 2004 Spring Training average: .222 2004 regular season average: .293 2005 Spring Training average: .185 2005 regular season average: .236 Overall Spring Training average: .214 Overall regular season average: .272 IIRC, Cesar Crespo had a fantastic Spring Training in 2004. Perhaps the Sox should have looked him up...? |

I know you were using those numbers to defend him, Griff, but now I might be even more concerned. He's hitting below his ST avg. from last year when he could only muster .236 for the season.
For the overall years you provided he hit +.058 better in the regular season than in ST. If he continues to hit .174 does that mean we should expect him to hit .232 for the '06 season? The Crespo comparison is a bit unfair because Crespo was never a top tier major leaguer hitter. There have been a few (very few) exceptions but when most players tank like he did last year they don't bounce back. Again I hope I'm wrong but I think concern is justified given the history. |

Lowell will be fine, forget about ST. Foulke was lights out last year in ST and sucked in regular season. Papi is hitting below .200 in WBC, are we worried about him? Wait until it counts.

I'm actually not trying to defend Lowell, just provide a bit of perspective. I did see a quote today (can't recall just where) in which Lowell said he never hits well in the spring, so I thought I'd look it up, just to satisfy my own curiosity.
As for Foulke, there's a guy who generally has a tradition of bad springs - he was absolutely horrible in 2004. So, what does it all prove? That Spring Training should be seen as what it is - a chance to get yourself ready for the season. A torrid spring could result in a torrid summer, but then again, it might not. Human beings are dueucedly difficult to pin down. |

I remember Foulke's bad year in 2004, I thought oh boy yeah great closer. ST is very deceiving. I think it is too early to tell. Sometimes guys try too hard.

I think with Lowell, it's a source of concern because of the what happened to him last year. I don't think we release him based on his ST numbers, but I think beind concerned is appropriate.
If he hit .300 and was totally clutch last year, then I wouldn't be concerned, but he had a horrible 2005. |
