Boy, did Paps look great or what? Out of all the Spring pitching I have seen so far..that was the most impressive session I have seen so far (even about the over-hyped DiceK outing). Also, despite the risk of the kiss-ass implications....I HAVE to say, hearing Remy color the games is wonderful. He has come a long way and in my mind, is a (if not THE) premier call guy in baseball. I enjoy his commentary as much as I enjoy the game. Thank you Mr. Remy.

I was watching and doing other stuff at the same time. He was lights out though. I know he was pitching no hit ball for one inning, I think the same for his second inning but not 100% sure.
He looked damn good to me though! |

Found it...
2 innings, 0 hits, 0 walks, 4 K's K'ed the side in the 1st. Man I hope they keep him in as a starter and find somebody who can close. He's a waste as a closer IMO. |

He was lights out indeed, especially in his first inning...1-2-3 with the KOs. He looked way more like a quality closer than a starter, but that is a whole other thread!

I would expect him to do well in two innings, that is similar to what he did last year. The real test will be when he has to go for longer outings, and through the order a second and third time.
I think he has the stuff to do it but we will see. A good first outing is always a good thing. |

I agree with Mac one short outing doesn't a season make. My concern is getting through a line-up a 2nd and third time.

You're absolutely right Phil it's the 2nd, and 3rd time through the line-up. How he approaches that situation is really going to give a true feel for what he's got as starter.
When I read about his 'start', it sounded more like he 'closed'. Not unlike a two innings, four out save. He threw 26 pitches and only one was a curve ball. The rest were all fastballs. So, granted it was a good outting but he also didn't pitch it like a starter. We really only witnessed a typical Jon Papelbon, (I refuse to call him Paps), close. |

You can yell at me if you want, but folks, this is VERY early on in spring training and I am not sure that you can draw any conclusions from these games. As we near the end of ST and players stay in the game longer and longer, if will be a lot easier to make some judgments.
As Max and Phil said, it was two innings, only two innings and he performed as he did last year as a closer. Let's take a deep breath and see what he does later in ST---and this goes for everyone as well. I know people are anxious for baseball, but maybe we need to take a deep breath and give them some time. JMO Peggy |

Excellent point Peggy,
It's hard to take anything from early spring training games: Johan Santana could have a bad outing; does that mean he should be demoted to the minors to start the season??? |

I don't get that. There's nothing conclusive here, just insights into the more subtle nuances of Papelbon's first spring outing. Just a running dialoge, commentaries and observations that's all. It goes with out saying its early, but its still fun.
Whats about "Paps" as a nickname. Now that's gotta go. |

Last year I remember Papelbon talking about wanting to become a starter for this year and I remember an interview with Beckett last year (before Papelbon was officially talked about by the FO) as going into the rotation for the the 2007 and Becketts saying something like..."I didn't know we got to pick what we wanted to do"
I found that a bit telling that JPaps may be the new RS "golden boy". He was a "saviour" of sorts for us last year. What will happen if he gets sent to the BP. Will he suck it up or will he whine about it. I think that the FO wants him in the rotation but unless Pinero can step it up or Donnelly can deliver, we will need a closer and as it has been discussed on the "who'll be left standing by the AS break" thread there ain't much out there. Quote: THere is something about him than makes me think that he will take a "Wakefield" attitude and do what is best for the team. The kid wants to be a winner and he will do it whatever it takes. He ust seems like a real "team" player to me. jmo Peggy RIP Alan |

Quote:That depends. In public he is chanting all the right cliches about doing whatever is best for the team and always has. And he still establishing his career, so he is no doubt more flexible. Bill Lee when asked if he liked relieving or starting better and why said that being a starter was better because you knew when you had to work and when you could party. That said who knows how Papelbon would feel about it? It would depend on what the team is doing and also what he is doing. It is a lot more fun to be one of the four baddest guys on earth (closer) than it is to be just another starter with a 4.50 ERA and a .500 record. And the last thought on whining, whining most often follows losing. If the RS are in the heat of a race I think he'd be far less likely to whine. |

I think that you make clear points on this. Privately he may not be a happy camper, but if the RS are in the hunt and it needs to happen, happy or not I do think he will suck it up.

Recently, (two days ago), Dr. Thomas Gill addressed this issue publicly. He said it was not only the right decision, but it was also the only sound decision. So why continue to discuss it any further?
Does anyone think for a second the condition will change or some how improve? It wont. It can't, it is part of his unique physical structure. It is not uncommon either, it is widely believed that the shoulder can be supported and enhanced with regular strength rebuilding exercises. That is what he is to do on his four days rest. This is why the decision was made. With regular maintenance, he should be able to continue his career. With the other option beingOr not!!!! There are no guarantees on this approach either but Jonathan Paplebon has a potentialy ace type pitching future ahead of him. Knowing all this, does any one really believe the diagnosis should simply be ignored just to win this year? It was just last year I was sitting in Phillys new Liberty Park, (saw Becket hit his homerun). Before the game, they had the Preakness on the Jumbotron. Being a horse guy, and less of a race fan I watched as 'Barbero' punched through the gate prematurely and every trainer and vet watching knew what to do next, but sound judgment wasnt on the race card that May afternoon. I am afraid common sense went out the window that day too. What did happen next was that collectively, responsible professionals put their heads down. I remember screaming aloud as BARBERO was being walked back into the chute. My wife a knowledgeable horse person, knowing full well why I was going nuts in the stands, but still telling me to calm down. HEY!!!!, I shouted to no one, WHADDA YA DOIN? WAIT!!! YOU CANT PUT HIM BACK IN. The Philly fans were all yelling at me to shut-up and stop jinxing the race. Soon the bell rang, I looked down. I could not watch. As things unfolded, the people who where yelling at me 30 seconds ago now just looked at me, mouths open. To this day I get a lump in my throat knowing just how easily all of that could have be avoided. Winning at all costs is not winning. Dr Gill insinuated the other day that it was out of the question to pursue Jonathan Pabelbon as a closer without continued physical risk. If you are Paplebon do you risk your future this way? If doctors say, Do not use him this way., and you, and your team knowingly forgo that diagnosis, I have to ask, whos dumber, the FO, the media, the fans, or Jonathan Papelbon? If Papelbons shoulder does pop while he is closing, I am not saying he is going to have to be taken out and shot, buthe just might want you to. |

Actually Paps Said on WEEI in January that the reason for him moving to the rotation was NOT because of his shoulder, It was to get more innings out of him
