Posts: 4 03/15/07 1:20 PM Rem Pup	Tags : None The potential callups for the Red Sox this year are extremely interesting and a few may be full timers in the future. Here is a quick look at a few of them. David Murphy - The former 1st rounder has rebounded extremely well after a slow start to his minor league career and has impressed more than a few people in camp this offseason including Tito and the great Yaz himself. His stock is higher than it ever was and if he is somehow still with the Sox after the trading deadline expect to see him called up again. Brandon Moss - An 8th round pick in 02 Moss burst onto the scene after a breakout season in 04. He has yet to repeat that season but has put in quite a bit of work and will be part of an outstanding Pawtucket outfield. Jacoby Ellsbury - The speedy CF in a Johnny Damon mold is on the fasttrack to Boston. Highly praised by all who watch him he can connect bat to ball with the best of them and impressed in Spring Training Edgar Martinez - This long term Sox prospect made a successful change to pitching in 04 and posseses a cannon of an arm. Expect E-Mart to be a September callup this year George Kottaras - Kottaras aquired in the David Wells trade is being groomed as Belli's eventual replacement and then hopefully Teks. Has been learning to catch the knuckleball as he enters his first full season in the Boston organization Clay Buchholtz - One of the highest touted pitchers for the Sox since Jon Lester this kid brings the heat. He has got an arsenal of pitches and dominated in his stops at Greenville and Wilmington. Will start the year at Portland but could potentially see some time in the majors come September

RemDawg Posts: 5157 03/15/07 2:12 PM Stat Dawg	I think the idea is that these players will be ready to be called up - and at the least they will be called up when rosters expand in September. For instance, Ellsbury will likely have to wait til September to be called up, and after that he will likely be traded, since Crisp and Drew are already signed for next year and beyond.

I highly doubt Ellsbury is going anywhere I think if anything Crisp is the one who will have to worry come next year. If he does not bounce back this year he will lose his job to Ellsbury than again if he performs great he still may be gone as his stock will be high. Ellsbury will be roaming CF for the Sox in 08

Crisp has a higher ceiling at the present, and already has hit .300 in the majors. Ellsbury may or may not shake out, so he's the one likely to go. Also, Elsbury has very little power, while Crisp has over 20 HR power. In the AL east, that will make a difference.

I fully expect him to bat .300 this year with a good 20+ HR and 80+ RBIs

No doubt that if he doesn't perform this year, the Sox will write him off as a failed experiment...perhaps even by the trade deadline if he has a down first half. I would like nothing better than him having a good year and giving us a couple of good years.

I got the impression that he played hurt for most of the season. It will be really interesting to see how this outfield does. I think we will be pretty damn happy. It is going to be really nice to have a few guys who can really run. Lugo and Crisp should really motor around the basis. Previous to playing for LA (and Grady) Drew also stole some bases. Sue

As far as Kottaras goes, leave him in Pawtucket all year. If he does well, have him intern under Tek in 2008 and take over in 2009, similar to what the Yankees did with Girardi and Posada way back when.

Rem Pup Posts: 350 03/16/07 5:58 AM	I like Coco and if healthy there is no reason he can't continue his rising career. I was impressed how he came back, and tried to maintain a high level of play. It had to have been very painful because of the subsequent surgery. I just think he feel behind and wasn't / couldn't grip the bat or control his swing as he was accustom to. He certainly did his best in CF. I want to give him a by.

Rem Pup Posts: 491 03/16/07 7:07 AM Rem Pup	Kottaras could end up being a future catcher for the Red Sox, as we have seen in a number of occations....rushing a guy into the majors can hurt a player more than help. I would like Kottaras to bulk up a little more and maybe put another minor league year under his belt before they toss him out there for any length of time in the majors. He certainly has shown potential.

RemDawg Posts: 6971 03/16/07 9:27 AM RemDawg	Kottaras will get his time in AAA IMHO. At the time of the trade (late last summer) he had but a handful of AAA ABs (and not great ones). By my way of thinking I can't see a situation where the RS call him up until the roster expands. If one of the catchers go down the RS will be looking in other directions for more experience. This may not be a very popular position but the RS do not have as dynamic a pipeline in the high minors as the Theo friendly local media suggests. Nor was it as naked when Duquette left as they suggested (Lester, Anibal, Freddy and Han-Ram say hi!) The RS drafts have been dominated with pitching picks and that is not neccesarily unwise but the organization's depth in position players reflects that tact. If the RS have needs during the season, their AAA is going to be a tough way to go. They have a lot "nice players" who are fairly athletic but the system is devoid of power hitting and impact players. It is probably why Theo allowed himself to engage in the WMP trade which on the surface was a case where the RS gave up a legitimate 4th-5th ML starter who was right on his money for an under developed power hitter with poor plate discpline and bad baseball instincts from base running to fielding.

If you want him to bulk up, the majors is where he should be. Unless you are a Latino relief pitcher, bulking up in the majors is pretty easy.

Rem Pup Posts: 491 03/16/07 5:13 PM Rem Pup	Well, I think quality training is quality training and although you may be right (who am I to say I "know"), I would be inclined to think they have very good training in the minor leagues too. I find him a little slight to hold the plate on an aggressive slide and I think a little more upper body would help his potential power.

If Ellsbury is ready next year, then he will likely see time as the 4th outfielder and then move into CF full time for 2009. If Crisp is still here, he goes to LF. Murphy will probably be the one to be moved. In 2009, we are likely to see an outfield of Moss, Ellsbury and Drew. Kotteras will get a full year in AAA with Castillo, one of them will get the call if there is an injury. Bucholz is another to stay in the minors for 2007, he could be a factor in 2008 helping to fill the holes of Schilling and Wake if they walk or retire. Having a rotation of Beckett, Daisuke, Papelbon, Lester and Bucholz in 2008 won't be too bad.

If he continues to excel, we may see him sooner than you might think. Having seen him pitch in the College World series last year, he is a dominating pitcher.
