Would it be possible to send him to AAA, get his groove back and trade him for something useful?

Just looking at today's box score and I saw what seemed to be a typical Craig Hansen outing - 1 IP and 2 ER's. Not impressive considering at that point, he's probably facing minor leaguers.
Would it be possible to send him to AAA, get his groove back and trade him for something useful? |

Even with injuries Hansen should still start in Pawtucket. He needs to throw first strikes, and have better command of his pitches. He had a tough day today. So did Timlin sort of.
Better yet, staple him to Willie Mo's leg and ship them over to the 'Nationals' for Cordero. Call it a day. |

I have little doubt he will be in Pawtuckett to start the season but I see no reason to be in a hurry to trade him. The guy is still young and undeveloped (Cla Meredith says "Hi").
Quote: Something useful like, say...BP help? If he gets his groove back wouldn't you want to keep him. It's not like he's spare parts or believe in the "doesn't have the mentality to play in Boston" nonsense. Quote: Wily Mo AND Hansen to Nats for Cordero? That would be extremely short sighted on the Sox part. Bowden would have to be a complete moron to not make that deal... which means he wouldn't make that deal. |

Right now Craig Hansen is nothing special. He is a two pitch pitcher, who throws a fast ball on a string and can't locate his slider for strikes.
He may well be joining the enormous list of number #1 draft picks that never work out. Then again he may get on top of it but it goes to show it is not an easy sport to jump levels in. Quote:In a sense yes, but at least in part because Cordero gave up a lot of HRs last year and his home park is a place HRs go to die on the warning track. OTOH when your roster has as many aging stars on it as this one does and starting rotation with so much promise, sometimes it makes sense to pay for a shot at it all today with your high speculative futures. Cordero isn't that guy but there is a time and a place. After all rumor has it that it can take over 80 years sometimes to win a WS Championship. |

It seems to me that Hansen suffers from the all to common condition but the scantly reported issue of someone who is great in the small time but can't cope with the big time. Perhaps the rushed him, perhaps the hightened expectations comprimised his concentration....regardless of the reason...fact remains, Hansen has failed at the Majors level. That is not to write him off for dead, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see he is choking at the MLB level.

Lets not forget that 2 years ago at this time Craig was pitching to COLLEGE kids, He indeed was rushed. The Immediate comparisons to Mariano Rivera did not help

Quote:Amen Brotha! Getting out guys in the Big East holding aluminum bats is different than getting guys out in the Big Leagues hold big lumber! Hansen has not been able to throw his sinker for strikes and that fastball might over match college players and even a decent percentage of A and AAA players but it won't get by MLB hitters too often. Lesson here, until they've done here it is speculation and hype. Baseball America has predicted 18 of the last 5 break out draft picks. |

Craig Hansen just started pitching this ST, so he still needs to get into rhythm. The young pitchers like Hansen & DelCarmen will be down in R.I. when April comes around and they will get their work in and continue to develop. They have time to learn a new pitch and gain command of the ones they have. There is no need to rush them to the majors and then toss them on the scrap heap. It would have been nice to see Cla have the time to mature as a pitcher, but he was sacrified to get the Tim & Doug duo back together. If Timmy is gonna pitch for us for the next ten years, then having Dougie around for awhile longer is the way to go. Hansen may be ready to contribute on the big league level later this year or maybe not until next year, but don't be so quick to toss the young arms when they don't dazzle you right out of the gate.

Quote: SOmetimes we expect miracles. Time in Pawtucket will do a world of good to both of these young men. Seasoning makes a good meal and seasoning often makes a good pitcher. (sorry, that was really bad) If they have the patience with themselves we should also. jmo Peggy GO TERRIERS!! |

I thought they were too quick to run Cla out of town. However, I think Hansen is just nothing special. From what I've seen, he has control troubles and a 97 MPH fastball that is straight will go straight to the cheap seats.
Also, unlike most other pitchers his MLB service time started to tick when he signed his contract (thanks Mr. Boras). Of course, if he does not perform, this would hurt his trade value. But, if he's not going to contribute, then something might be better than nothing. |

Hansenz needs time in AAA he isn't ready for the bigs. 2 HBP and then 2 BB now 3-0 Reds ...... I know it is St and he is working on something LOL!!!!! NOT he needs to be in AA or AAA and get command of his pitches. He can throw Flames but what good are they of they are nowhere near the K zone.

Ouch...I didn.'t realize the game was on ESPN...unfortunately I missed DKM pitch. I am glad I missed Hansen, it sounded awful on radio. He is not ready. Not nearly.

Right now he looks like a million dollar bust.
I'm not saying he can't turn it around, and I don't think the team should get rid of him (this kid is precisely the type of guy who would go on to bite them in the a$$, Cla Meredith style). But, they should think about putting him in AA and letting him get his stuff together. |

And now you have to fear the mental damage factor. He definately has heat, but is missing everything else (it seems). I too hope if he hides out of the spotlight for a while with less pressure in the minors, he can find himself.

Yes - I hope they send him to Portland. I'm getting tickets to 20 games this year. I'd love to see him pitch here.

ok Randy Johnson was erratic and so was Sandy Kofax granted but what about the millions that were erratic and didn't make it at all? Nice to think but thats a heady group you're putting him in. No two humans are a like and for every happy ending there are literally millions that arent. Sorry it's AA for Mr Hansen

Hansen was doing rather well last season with the PawSox as a starter. Hansen was up to four innings and was in that conversion process when the Sox were forced to rush him due to the ongoing 'pen disaster of last season. With his stock dropping on the closer depth chart maybe they'll go back to the starter idea? In that slot a mistake or two won't kill you and he'll have a chance to regain use of his college days "Best in the nation" slider. Maybe devlop a workable change or work on that split finger FB he's been experimenting with? This guy has a quality arm and will produce some day at the ML level either in Boston or elsewhere.
