Hot Dawg Posts: 1532 04/30/07 7:17 PM Hot Dawg	Tags : None Somewhere, buried deep on the board, is a similar topic so I thought I'd start a new thread. Summer's coming and when I'm not watching baseball, I'm reading. I'm sure plenty of other dawgs do the same so now is a good time to share our favorites and get a few ideas for some summer reading. For those of us of a certain age, I just read "The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid" by Bill Bryson. It's about being a kid during the fifties in America and it's the funniest book I have ever read. He lived in Des Moines, Iowa, but a kid is a kid no matter where you live. Some of you younger folks may not be able to get what is so funny about it, but for those of you who were children in the fifties, you will be rolling on the floor.

Hot Dawg Posts: 1256 04/30/07 7:27 PM Dawg in Training	I'm reading the latest Stuart Woods "Stone Barrington" book, Fresh Disasters. Woods has written a bunch of these, about a NYC lawyer, who is also a former cop. Easy reads and good characters. Harlan Coben's newest, The Woods, is in the queue. For those who like sports, Coben writes a Myron Bolitar series (not the latest though). Myron is a former basketball player for the Celtics who is now a sports agent/investigator. Good books! Recently finished Heart-Shaped Box, by Joe Hill (who is Stephen King's son). Good genes, good book. I've also discovered Jim Butcher's "Dresden" books. I liked the TV show so thought I'd read the books. And eagerly awaiting the new Harry Potter Joan (reads A LOT)

"Baseball is the only sport where you can fail 7 out of 10 times and still be called a great player"

For those of you who've never read Bill Bryson, he's smart, witty, sarcastic, and slightly irreverent. He's written several books - "A Walk in the Woods," about hiking the Appalachian Trail... oh heck why don't I just link you, I can't remember all of the titles. But the book is about so very much more. HIGHLY recommend. Currently reading My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult....Very good! We're all Day to Day......[/b]

A Walk in the Woods is a classic. I started Lost Continent but couldn't get into it for some reason. It's still in my bedside table waiting for a revisit... A coworker who was moving brought in a box of old books for us to pilfer through so I grabbed "Polaroids from the Dead" by Douglas Coupland. It's an older book (mid 90's) but I loved Generation X so I thought I would give it a shot. So far so good. Brings back some good memories... Also reading "The Nasty Bits" by Anthony Bourdain. His first book "Kitchen Confidential" is a must read for anybody who has worked (or eaten) in a restaurant. Might be the funniest book I have ever read.

Hot Dawg Posts: 1532 05/02/07 1:33 PM Hot Dawg	I also recently finished "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen. It's a fictional story about a young man who becomes a vet for a traveling circus back during the Depression. A really good read. Which led me to what I'm currently reading, "Cat Man," a novel by Edward Hoagland who actually did work with a traveling circus. Regarding Harry Potter, since so many of us are going to be reading that, maybe we should agree to not comment on it in this thread as it may be a spoiler for a lot of people. Once the book comes out, we could set up a special "Harry Potter" thread so we can talk about it without ruining it for others who haven't read it yet. I plan on reading it as soon as I get it. I've reserved my copy at Border's already.

I'll probably at least read the last 2 books before the new one comes out, but if I haven't, I'm reading the new one when it comes out anyway!! I want to know how Harry finally gets his revenge on Voldemort.
