Tonight you symbolized the turn around that this team has finally started: the first inning you were beaned in the head with a ball that bounced all the way back to the mound. After laying there for a few minutes, you miraculously got up and took your base. Then, in the third inning you dove into the stands to catch a pop-up and stole third base in an inning where we scored seven runs. I think this team has finally gotten up out of the dirt and is ready to go out and run the league down!

While we fans have been lamenting the loss of many regulars for many games, I have to put in a plug for the players that were left to trudge along on the field, at the plate, and on the mound I have been particularly impressed with Mike Lowell. I hope his leadership, professionalism, and skill will not go unappreciated.

Before you start to read this, be forewarned, it will touch your heart. This story was told on WEEI today as reported to them by Peter Gammons.
Back in April there was a terrible car crash and four young people lost their lives. One was a young woman who was a student at UNH and Mike Lowell was her favorite player. Someone got in touch with the Red Sox and Mike. He sent a signed uniform to the family with words that sent Lauren to another place and which concluded with Rest in Peace, dear Lauren. The uniform draped her coffin. I am sorry that I do not have the rest of the words, but they were very touching. (was in car at the time) Imagine the way this young woman's family felt that a member of the Boston Red Sox whom they did not know, would take the time to do this. There is another side to so many players on this team (and others) that we never see. No wonder I love this guy. Peggy |

What a fabulous story, just what I would expect from my favorite player, who has shown that it is possible to perform well, be a team leader and respect his fans without turning into a diva like so many others have. With free-agency looming around the corner I have been on pins and needles worrying about whether the "powers that be" will do the right thing and assure that Mike stays with the team. I can't imagine enjoying the game nearly as much if they let him get away!
