I saw in today's Globe that Jason and his wife are divorcing. Despite his legendary focus, I can't believe that it is not a factor in his offensive
troubles this season...just as I believe that J.D.'s son's health is a factor in his success this year as opposed to last. They are real guys with
families and emotions and sometimes things are tough.

While off the field issues certainly can impact a player's performance, the timing is bad for Varitek. He is 36 years old and in the final year of his
contract. His sharp drop off in production is not unusual for a catcher his age, without off field issues. One can assume when the RS only offered 3 years
after the 2004 season they argued this point in negotiation with Scott Boras and the Captain.
I think it is going to be pretty tough for the RS to satisfy Varitek's contract demands at the end of this season. For all the kudos Tek gets in terms of his digesting RS data and converting it to a well called game, his offense is awful and it is not a safe bet at 36 years of age his marital woes are the cause. He was never great at throwing out runners and he has gotten worse and his footwork while still solid behind the plate has slowed. It is hard to imagine Varitek accepting a contract commensurate with his 2008 performance and it would be a wild eyed gamble for the RS FO to give him a contract commensurate with the "intangible" factors that have become Jason's legend in RS Nation over the years. |

No way will Theo resign teK. Never mind the divorce, he has annually gone in the tank in the clutch and is at or below average in every statistically measurable category for his career. As I have stated here before , he is the most overated Boston professional athlete ever , or perhaps second only to Drew Bledsoe. ..Boras will want Posada $ and years. Theo has never paid big $ to athletes similarily situated ( Pedro, Damon, Manny ). ..Say good bye to Teflon teK 'cause ( thankfully) there aint no way he is back here as anything other than bullpen coach. |

You guys are tough! I did not say that it was THE reason for his awful offense...just a contributing factor that helped it get so bad, so fast. Only way he
is back is on Theo's terms...and that ain't gonna happen as a Boras client. Actually, I'm not sure where or whether it will happen for anything
near what they're going to be (presumably) asking for.

He's been horrid at the plate for the past three seasons. Unless his divorce has been that protracted, I don't see that as a major factor in his
decline. Maybe he wasn't that great and now he's getting old and the tools of ignorance have done him in.

Could Varitek be coming out of his funk? The past few games have been better. I have the feeling he will resign here.

If there wasn't a dearth of catchers in Sox system or MLB in general, I would say I hope he signs anywhere else. However, I really don't know what will
happen with him. I would love to see an upgrade back there via trade or FA.

Any upgrade would be via trade IMHO. This is the potential FA list.
Catchers Rod Barajas TOR Henry Blanco * CHC Johnny Estrada WAS Toby Hall * CWS Adam Melhuse TEX Mike Redmond * MIN Ivan Rodriguez NYY David Ross * CIN Javier Valentin CIN Jason Varitek BOS Vance Wilson DET Gregg Zaun * TOR Nobody on this list is going to fill Jason Varitek's shoes IMHO, including Jason Varitek. |

Well put. Marc. The Red Sox cannot consider bringing back Varitek if they want to contend next year.
Toby Hall is the best catcher on that list both offensively and defensively IMO.

Giving Texas some pitching (Delcarmen & somone else?) could probably open the door for Saltali-whatever.

Can't get rid of Delcarmen. He's been awesome. The league is only hitting .234 against him this year. That guy is a KEEPER!

yeah .234... one game it is .000 and the next it is .500. I believe he will become more consistent and don't want to get rid of him, but I have no
confidence in him right now, outing to outing.

When the league is only batting .234 against you, you're doing a lot more right than you are wrong.
Man, Boston is a hard town. Any other city the fans would be grateful for such a great young arm in the pen.

Yes, there are people in the bullpen who haven't performed as well as they should have.
1. Craig Hansen (Thank God they traded him!!) 2. Aardsma (But mainly becauise of injury I think, since he was great in the first half) 3. Timlin (although he's come on strong and has been doing much better) Papelbon, Okajima, Masterson, Delcarmen, and Lopez have all been great!!
