I know, I can't get the games in my part of Florida either. I hope he does well.

"The results of this trade will be determined in September. "
-youngd2 No, that wouldn't be fair at all; there's no way of knowing how Manny would have done playing the rest of the year for the Red Sox (if he would have played at all), even iff he does well for LA, there's no guarantee he would have done that for the Red Sox! The results of the trade will be best judged after NEXT year.

The trade was made to mitigate the inevitable fact that Ramirez wasn't going to be here. While I don't buy everything about how others view the relationship between Manny and the franchise, he clearly was not a player that reacted well to playing each year without a contract. If the RS had used their two options, Ramirez would have spent three seasons without his next season's fate secured. That wasn't going to work. To be fair Bay must be judged on his own merits. He is a good player, with above average offensive skills and good if not great overall tools. The RS issues
are far deeper than one spot in the batting order and Jason Bay was not acquired to attempt to retool the team.

On a team where Pedroia, Youkilis and Drew have exceeded the expectations the FO had for them, Ellsbury has been up and down and while Coco has been solid, the
jury is still a little bit out on how durable Papi will be after his injury I still believe even without Manny and the iffy-ness of David we are somewhat
deeper offensively then we thought at the start of the season. Bay is just expected to be Bay and I think that will be good enough. He is a decent baserunner
and decent fielder and has an average arm. I have a feeling he is going to enjoy playing for a contender and the 'kids' on the team will love him. I
am happy having a solid LF'er vs. a unhappy superstar who seemingly stopped wanting to be part of this venue. So be it. Ready to move on, I expect Bay to
blossom in Boston. If we don't make it to the playoffs this year it will have more to do with pitching and middle relief issues than anything.

I think what Jason Bay didn't expect was a pie in the face from David Ortiz

Well no one can complain about week one with this guy he was fantastic. Great OBP, scored lots of runs, knocked in some. Of course Manny had a monster week in
L.A. but then we expected that. I am happy with what we are seeing from Bay. He seems happy.

bay i think is batting .327 with the red sox w/ 12 RBI. very nice for a career .282 hitter.
red sox are 10-3 since the trade--77% winning percentage for a team that is right now at .582 for the season-a nice jump in winning % to be sure. with the dodgers, manny is batting .423 w/ 17 RBI. really nice for a career .313 hitter. dodgers are 9-5 since manny (shades of dolly parton), 64.2% winning percentage, for an overall .516 team- good jump, but not as nice as ours. the yankees are 3-7 in their last 10--i love that. what can be done about tampa bay tho? 2 of their major guys are out, but they're still winning, impressively. i still think we'll win the AL EAST. oh & i meant to add that i live in LA and people are really freakin' out over manny here. my friend dave, lifelong dodgers fan, has a man-crush on manny and manny is already by far the biggest draw, most beloved, most popular player on the team. i used to love manny. i still kinda do. but i see he had to go. |

I would not read too much into the Red Sox post-trade record. They swept the A's, who are the most pathetic team in baseball right now. They won 2 of 3 in
KC, who are pretty pathetic. They split a 4 game series with the Pale Hose, which is fine. They then won 3 straight against the pitching poor Texas. They could
not beat the Blue Jays in the abbreviated 2 game series, so they are now 10-5, which isn't bad, but one has to consider the compitition.
The Dodgers won 2 of 3 from the Diamondbacks, then lost 2 of 3 to the Cardinals and Giants (Cardinals are good, Giants are terrible and they did not face Lincecum), then swept the Phils in a 4 gamer.

liking 2 blasts in one game. This is a good thing. Sox need to pour it on this month...put some pressure on the devil dogs.

Derek, to say the Red Sox "couldn't beat the Blue Jays in a 2 game series" is over-simplifying what REALLY happened.
What REALLY happened is the Red Sox faced 2 of the best starting pitchers in the major leagues!! Those 2 losses don't mean too much to me, and I was glad Beckett got his bad start out of the way against a pitcher the Red Sox were likely to have a hard time beating anyway.

I have to say I'm amazed how well the Sox have done since dumping Manny. It can't be a coincidence....he must have been a real problem. They're
not always right, but in this case another good job by Theo & the FO.

I think part of it is the character of this team and has been over the last few years... when one of their big names leaves the lineup, someone always steps up
to fill the void.

With all due respect, while Manny Ramirez staying in Boston was a perilous tact, given just how toxic the relations between the GM and the player became at the
deadline, I am not sure his subtraction changed the team.
On July 31st after having played the hardest part of their schedule the RS were 3 games behind Tampa Bay. As of this morning the RS are 3 games behind Tampa Bay. Honestly there is much to be applauded in that accomplishment given the number of injuries over that period of time. But to suggest they did this because they didn't have Ramirez is a reach. If that were so, I guess it is because they were without Drew, Lowell, Colon and Beckett too? Sometimes the players really stepped up and the schedule was and will continue to be their friend the rest of the way. Remarkable yes but there shouldn't be an urban legend that trading Ramirez was a turning point. |

Manny has done quite well in LA too. I still think the media has to bare some of the responsibility for this episode. If this was Cleveland, Detroit, or Kansas
City, no one would hear about it and it could have all been handled in house.

youngd2 wrote:The media certainly was a factor but it is notable that this the media outlets that made the dispute take on a life of its own and become so bad that a trade became the only answer were FOX and ESPN Deportes. After all that is where Epstein called out Ramirez (FOX) and where Ramirez broke years of relative public silence regarding RS management (ESPN Deportes). The way the other players have picked up the team in spite of the departure of Manny and the barrage of injuries that seemed to follow is remarkable. And Derek is right, Manny is continuing his game seamlessly in LA. As for the subject of our thread, Jason Bay is a very good player. He reminds me of JD Drew, there isn't anything he doesn't do well and there is nothing remarkable about his game either. Hopefully he will prove to be more durable than Drew. While he is never going to be the force in the line-up that is Manny Ramirez, he certainly is a nice addition and about as good replacement as Epstein could have hoped to get for a struggling minor league reliever with an unattractive contract and a AAA OF that has promise of being an average MLB player. |
