Jason Bay - What to expect |
Lead | ||
|
Figured I'd start a new topic for this. What do folks think? And I don't want to hear "He'll never fill Manny's shoes". Let's
talk about the guy on his level. What does he bring to the club and what do folks think he'll provide for the future. Will the short left field help him?
I heard left in Pittsburgh was a monster!!

I know very little save the stats shown on TV for comparison.
My only expectation as of tonight is a happy player who is thrilled to have been given an opportunity with a contender to play hard, show up and be a TEAM player. I suspect Bay will meet and exceed those expectations! Welcome to Boston, Jason!

From boston.com, "The Jason Bay File: (More than) 30 things to know abut the newest Sox slugger":

I think the timing of this trade works in Jason Bay's favor.
He has two months to adjust to playing in Boston (an adjustment period is always needed it seems), and then a full season next year to show what he can do. But I think it will only take a short time for him to adjust, and I think he will be hitting well before September if the fans give him a chance and don't unfairly blame him for being traded for Manny. I think if the Red Sox make the playoffs, Bay will be a major postseason contributor, and will have made the adjustment to Boston smoothly before then. JMO

His spray chart suggests he doesn't hit all fields with power and given how big RF at Fenway is that isn't all bad. The only question is whether he is
a line drive hitter because he could find Fenway to a be a tough experience if he is. 13 of 15 HR at PNC this year were pulled to left. Two were to CF and may
well have been outs or doubles in the triangle. He is a different hitter than Ramirez, his spray chart shows he can't dive the ball hard to all fields. But
he has a very good OBP and that no doubt was an attraction for Epstein.
While the RS probably won't do it but Ortiz probably should now move to the 4 spot and that would certainly create greater opportunities for whoever ends up the 3 hitter (probably should be Youk). It is Big Papi's turn to be the protector of another hitter. The offense may be a little less intimidating without Ramirez (duh). If Ellsbury could get back on track it would change the dynamic quite a bit. It is a team game so while the RS aren't a better team without Ramirez (anymore than they were for 2 months without Ortiz) with adjustments and guys picking it up they will score enough. |

Bay plays hard and will be liked - right handed Trot Nixon - He has had to work for everything he's done. Was not highly drafted, or even considered a
prospect - started his pro career in the lowest level of the Minors (short season A Ball) in the organization of the worst team in the Majors (Expos), and
worked his way up. Hard working - low ego.
Don't expect the same numbers he put up in the NL playing on a team where pitchers could afford to not be too careful with him - as shown when they actually were careful - BA w/RISP is 0.218 this year - that may be an aberration in that there was not much else in the lineup to fear IMHO it would be a mistake to drop him in the clean up spot right away. This kid has never played an MLB game that mattered, certainly not in a pennant race in a place like Fenway. Start him off in the 6 spot and let him ease into things. Don't even give the impression that they think he is going to replace... the last left fielder... in the batting order. Maybe drop him in the 4 spot (if you don't put Papi there - or the 3 spot if you do) on the inevitable occasions when Drew is hurting. |

The thing about Ortiz, Bay, and Drew is they draw a lot of walks, resulting in a high on-base pctg, so eventually you have to have them batting 3-4-5 (sandwich
the righty between the two lefties) and Lowell (doesn't draw as many walks) would be perfect at the 6th spot.

Manny did have a higher OBP and SLG than Bay does. That's not a good sign.

Bay won't walk as much in Boston - cuz he'll see more strikes - & that could be a good thing

The two things that concern me are his RISP numbers and K numbers. If he can raise one and lower the other, I think I can live with him. I still wanted Hanley
Ramirez for the man man. Oh well sour grapes, it is what it is.

I really really wish I could see the game tonight. We're not gonna get any of this three game series televised here in FL.
I kinda feel bad for Bay right now. He's gotta be so nervous, coming to Boston in the middle of a playoff race and taking Manny's spot. I hope he gets a great reception from the fans. I read something somewhere that his dad was a big fan of Yaz and Rice and that he felt honored to be playing the position they played at Fenway. |

zimmerolls wrote: He definitely does strike out more. But I wonder how much of that is because he was the best hitter on his team and folks pitched around him. So naturally
he swung at pitches he shouldn't have because he was trying too much. I think he'll learn to be much more patient in Boston.

The Herald is reporting that Bay will hit in the 5th spot, behind Mike Lowell who will be batting cleanup.

sbukoski wrote: He walks a great deal which suggests that it isn't pitch selection or expanding his strike zone. Adam Dunn is a player with a high OBP and on his way
to being the all-time strikeout king. I believe he holds the single season record. It indicates he is a guess hitter that has a limited ability to spoil the
pitches when he guesses wrong to me.
While fans hate K's they aren't the end of the world if the batter is getting on base 37.5% of the time. This is a good baseball player who will provide production and there is probably no argument that the RS will be a better defensive OF on the road and have improved their base running. |

Bay stated he grew up with posters of Yaz and Rice as his father was a die hard Red Sox fan.

Jason Bay was terrific. What a great debut in front of the Fenway faithful.
The only concern that I have is in looking at his splits: vs right-handed pitcher: .307 vs left-handed pitcher: .190 Is he really that bad against southpaws? Do we need to platoon him with someone that can hit vs lefties? Granted the splits are only from this year and it is a small sample size (84 at-bats). His (almost HR) triple last night was off Alan Embree who throws left, so maybe the splits are misleading. Welcome to Boston Jason and may you patrol the green pasture of your childhood idols for many years to come! Carl |

It's difficult to make a judgment on a player in one day. The triple was nice, but that should have been a double if Cust does not misplay that off the LF
Wall. However, Bay won't solve the problems about our bullpen or the fact we are not really scoring runs. The Sox only scored 2 in 12 innings last night.
Luckily Oakland is in a worse funk than the Sox are.
Manny went 2-4 in LA, but hit into a double play in the 9th inning to kill any chance of a rally. The results of this trade will be determined in September.
