If they trade him because Henry is upset, maybe they should hold a mass RSN card burning ceremony in front of Fenway. This is getting idiotic.

What caused this silliness this time anyway? I missed it.Manny sitting out the last game in SEA and the first game in BOS with a "knee injury" that had never been revealed previously and the Sox are doubting exists. I personally do not count the 3 taken pitches while PH'ing just before this, though some people do. I believe he is doing this this because his new agent has convinced him he can get a better deal by being a free agant next year and Manny is making sure that it happens. As the Big Show has stated a few different times I have listened over the last month, and I happen to agree... I don't think he gets $20M/year and this only helps that new agent as the previous agent gets commissions on the existing deal. I believe Manny's best shot was to show his worth and make it hard for the Sox to let him go to free agency.

Well Ramirez has never responded to the annual trade deadline frenzy before but his english interview is even more telling than the Deportes interview in some
ways.
Manny basically said, "I am sick of them and they are sick of me." Seems to me this thing lost all dimension when it was played out before the media. The RS rightful beef is that the player did not mention he had been playing for a week with pain and did not request treatment prior to telling the manager he couldn't go on Wednesday in Seattle. As for trading him I still tend to think that may be more complicated than the RS can deal with. No matter what Manny says in anger, his agent is likely to demand that Manny's options are either both converted or turned into player options. Manny once he cools off a little bit is unlikely to approve a mid season trade to NL. He has previously stated he wants to stay in the AL. From the RS point of view I think their preferences are easy to guess what they'd like to do. Epstein would like to get younger with Texiera with their Manny money and move Youkilis to left. Theo makes that deal the RS are arguably a younger and better team. If not Ortiz becomes a .270 hitter with a huge OBP and 90 RBI. We will all think what we want about how Manny has handled his current "injury". But we also will all question why this went quite so public and began with the media stretching something as bizarre as a guy get three straight called strikes against the greatest reliever that ever lived into "the message" before the knee scratches happened. Draw what conclusion you will, but the fact that the same storyline was being sold to us on such a silly point is note worthy When I personally look at the totality of facts, I personally believe that the RS have played to the fan base to ensure nobody cries a tear when they don't pick up their option on Manny. They know that might cost them on the field in the short run. I won't bore you with all the stats but this team has not been as good W-L without Ramirez in the line-up. In fact as clutch as Ortiz has been the stats suggest from 2004 to 2008 no Manny hurts more than no Pap.i Not picking up that option has some risk if Theo can't score Texiera and the Yankees flush with Giambi money, a new stadium, deeper pockets and a hunger to put the RS back in their place may win that derby. So if Manny can be made the bad man, how good is that if you are the very thin skinned Theo Epstein? As for Boras talking Ramirez into being dysfunctional just to make a buck, that isn't Boras. Yes, Boras sometimes over estimates the ceiling of the market and in the process have hurt a client or two. But he also worked his tail off to reduce his agent fee when A-Rod wanted to come to Boston. The man makes enough money to always put what he believes are his client's best interests first and it is simplistic to suggest he would instruct his client to make the RS not want to pick-up their club option. BTW I predicted a week ago in BP thread that this would happen. If you take a moment and step back from the fact the RS FO is good fan relations and turns that into revenue and choose to look at the Trio's history, this is what they do. Unlike 2004 when Nomar couldn't play every day and the RS had a nasty 1-9 line-up, a trade of Ramirez won't make the 2008 RS better. This PR campaign is all about bringing in Texiera and if and when that fails being able to say "enough was enough" so that the brand remains strong in the minds of its fans. This promises to get uglier because the RS today are not a WS championship quality team and are in danger of not even making the playoffs. By making the best RH hitter in the franchise's history the blame the RS marketing plan moves on while hardly missing a beat. Dr. Chuck would be proud Theo! |

Check out Rob Bradford's column in the Herald this morning:
http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view.bg?&articleid=1109495&format=&page=2&listingType=sox#articleFull What a hypocrite Theo is: "We will have no further comment about this situation, on the record or off the record," Epstein said. "Our focus is on this team - which is in the middle of a pennant race - and in any case it would be premature to comment now on an offseason contractual issue." Didn't he start it all about the trade comments? Joan |

How is Theo a hypocrite???
All he did was state there will be no more comment on the issue!! He's not a hypocrite unless he starts commenting AFTER he said this.
Every day is a new adventure!

The odds are this will be like every other trade deadline -- lots of smoke but no fire. I predict Manny will be a Red Sox on Aug. 1.

I just thought Theo was a hyprocrite (maybe that wasn't the correct word) for saying "there will be no further comment" when in fact HE was the
first one to make the statement to Fox about trading Manny and told them to feel free to use his comments publicly. And now that he started it all, he
doesn't want to talk about it further? So he got out what he had to say. I think I liked it better when Manny kept his mouth shut

What's going on with Manny? | #31 | ||

Scott Boras can demand what ever he wants to demand except he has zero leverage. The Wret Sawxz do not even consider his
existence anymore on the Manny issue, never mind his 'demands'. It's a club option. The club will decide whether to cut bait or not.
Again this is now personal with Manny and Mr. Henry. I can't imagine Manny gaining a single thing from this. Boras may be blowing the same smoke he was blowing A-Rod in the spring at Manny. Even A-Clod didn't buy it. Manny is not going to get better. 4 years 100mil is a pipe dream. Especially if he 'tanks' this season on a team that is deep in the race. His value will decrease, as will the number of years offered. If he is not happy with one of the top franchises like Bawstone, what GM thinks their town can do better, have the cash, and the 4 yr commitment? Oh yea there's Omar Minya, the Issiah Thomas of baseball |

I don't know about anyone else but I am torn on this guy. He has produced for the Sox but has been a headache over the years as well. The latest dust up
could very well be the last straw. The guy is a dope no doubt. He has talent but is he now on a steady decline in his career so much so that the Sox
aren't willing to put up with him? I haven't even heard from players supporting him like in the past. Are they finally tiring of his act too? I
seriously doubt he will get more than 20 mil from any team. I know fans love this guy and I like him too but I root for the name on the front of the jersey
not the name on the back. Whatever is best for the team and Theo has done a nice job assembling a team so I trust he will do the right thing.

Personally I think Manny sought out Boras, rather than vice-a-versa. I think he did so because in his heart he believes the RS aren't going to pick up his
option. Now one can say this crap doesn't help and it doesn't. But the facts remain that Theo Epstein has wanted to unload Manny almost from the day he
was elevated to GM.
The FO has been a primary driver in almost every episode with Manny since 2004, with the exception of the "dinner with a NYY at the Ritz". Until yesterday Manny Ramirez always kept his own counsel regarding any issues he had with the club and it has been leaky unnamed sources in the FO who have done the talking in the media. Now Manny is often made to be a fool because he walks to a different drummer's beat but that doesn't make him stupid. He went and got Boras because he probably felt coming into this year that he may need an agent by November 2008. And given all the reports of how Ramirez deals with his money and the size of his contract, my guess would be that money (beyond that whole respect thing) won't be the biggest factor for him if he is a FA. My guess would be that a ballpark suiting his game (and there are many that better suit him than Fenway), staying in the AL where he knows all the pitchers and a chance to play for a championship will be high on his list. He is set for life already. The RS owe him $32M in deferred money to be paid out from 2012 to 2026. He got Boras because he is the best and there is ego in having the best deal but his criteria no doubt would look different than a player who hasn't earned $160M over the past 8 years. I think he loves being a RS (fans and the quality of the teams he plays on) but I do think right or wrong he is as burnt out on the management as they are on him and the accusations that he is faking an injury are as much a personal a front to him as John Henry found it objectionable that Manny said the RS on occasion have said one thing to his face and did another were to John Henry. In closing the real message was sent yesterday by Manny. He basically hit the nail on the head when he said if you think you have a better team without me, trade me and then went on the field and made the point stick. The other stuff is hard for me to believe... |

He's pretty good at making a fool out of himself. Should we start with cutting off the cut off throw? Foolish or just plain stupid?
Farve for Manny straight up. Do it now. |

This has gotten so old. As for the MRI showing nothing, I could not raise my arm above my waist for a week and had an MRI that showed nothing. I suppose I was
faking so I didn't have to pick up my kids. I don't care who the player is, if he says he's injured we should be taking him at his word. As for all
of the other crap, I have turned off EEI until they can stop talking about Manny. I turned off Mikey Adams months ago because he is the head dope for
Manny's head with CHB. He will be here for this season and then be somewhere else next year and the Nation will be moaning about why we didn't keep him
when he is at .310/20/65 at the All Star break for the Yankees, Angels, Mets, Phillies or D-Backs. Boras does not want the options picked up as he has stated
that he will be looking for 4/$100MM next year. I am not sure he will get $25MM from anyone, but he will get close to the $20MM he is leaving behind. All this
bluster and nothing will be different for Manny come Friday morning.
