Papi Injury: A Month to the Remainer of Season???? |
Lead | ||

That's the true harbinger of spring, not crocuses or swallows returning to Capistrano, but the sound of a bat on
a ball. ~Bill Veeck, 1976

This is a tough injury, obviously we want him back sooner rather than later. I would think they will try to fill in with someone, at least for a while, already
in the system maybe Brandon Moss.

If Manny can mentally handle being the everyday DH, maintaining his offensive numbers...we might just have the best defensive outfield in baseball! That
should help a bit to replace David's run production...and will be very fun to watch! Thank goodness we didn't trade Coco...and perhaps JD can DH a bit
to keep him in the lineup more consistantly...anyway, we have options with very good players already on the roster!

There is no way to make up for the offense that will be missed with Papi out of the lineup. This puts the pressure on the rotation and bullpen to be better
because they will not be getting the run support. Manny will see less pitches to hit with little protection in front of him. Youk does not provide anything
hitting in front of Manny, especially while he is in one his prolonged slumps. Hopefully Lowell can protect Manny on the other side and start hitting
consistently. As for replacements for Papi, having the defense in the OF is fine, but having Coco in the lineup everyday will hurt this team offensively. His
BA has dropped 60 points with more PT. Carter is a good offensive player and can play OF and 1B, Casey will also provide some offense. Likely to see Youk
getting more time in the OF.

I was just looking at the schedule and the Sox have three series at NL parks. They play at Cincinnati, Philly and Houston this month, so Papi wouldn't be
playing in most of those 9 games.

Yep, we will miss Papi. Hopefully the pitching can give up a few less runs. I agree with Sants in his assessment.

Time will tell how the RS play through this injury. Their OF defense becomes much more efficent with Manny playing DH and Ellsbury, Crisp and Drew as the
primary OF. It may be the best defensive OF in baseball. With Ellsbury, Crisp and Lugo in the line-up this is a deadly fast team on offense. Can Drew finally
play like a $14M player? Is this Youk's break out year for power? Can Varitek dial it up? Will the bullpen dial it up?
So while there is NO DOUBT that the RS are not a better team without the AL's best DH. But they can play through this, they may not but stranger things have happened in baseball.

Injury to Ortiz has obvious serious impact, but they can go on winning. This organization has thought of everything except.... What would happen if Varitek
went down?

Actually if Papi were healthy, Youk and Lowell would be missing most of the NL games, not Papi.

dongile wrote: We might over estimate that impact. Varitek works very hard to implement the data he is provided but remember it is data the RS provide him. Cash seems to be a very competent catcher at "catch and throw". There would be a drop off in offense but the sky would not fall in. The conventional wisdom on the subject points to Jason's two major stays on the DL. Both times his injury was only one of the factors. In 2006 the team had an inflated record early because of unbalanced scheduling, was already playing bad ball before he went down and destroyed by many injuries, not just Jason's. In the previous collapse another pretty vital player by the name Nomar Garciaparra also went down and that team wasn't very deep to start with.Back to Ortiz for a 20-30 game stretch the RS may be able to hold their own so I am sure they could do the same with an injury to the Captain. The pitcher's aren't co-dependents, they would get by. |

I think the Sox will be fine without Big Papi. We'll miss him but he hasn't been the same explosive clutch hitter since the knee started bothering him
last season. JD Drew seems to absolutely love hitting in the 3 hole as he gets better pitches with Manny hitting behind him then he does with Tek back there in
the 7 hole. Yeah, we'll suffer some in the power production but these Sox are a different breed than the ones who relied on the longball to win games. All
the way to a showdown with the Cubbies in October!!!!

I'm not sure HOW the Red Sox will end up playing the Cubs in October... are they planning an exhibition series with them after the World Series is over??

Since Ortiz went down:
Manny Ramirez: .433/.514/.967 J.D. Drew: .517/.615/1.207 These guys are stepping up, big time. |

Well, I'll say this... having the Cubs in the World Series is the only possible way to guarantee a championship to their opposition!
But I honestly don't think the Cubs are that good. (Even before Soriano was lost for 6 weeks). Their starting pitching is overacheiving, they have a less than mediocre bullpen, and all they have that should stay with them most of the season is good offense. Not enough to win the central IMO. However, Soto could win the ROTY the way he's playing!

The Cubs actually have a terrific bullpen, especially in the back end. Wood-Marmol is one of the toughest 8th-9th combos in baseball. Strikeout machines, both
of them.
I do agree one starter (Ryan Dempster) has pitched way over his head. Their only other pitcher having an All-Star year in "The Big Z", and he is a 27-year-old ace who is due for a great season. |

IMO the Cubs bullpen is overrated. Marmol is pitching over his head, and although Kerry Wood is doing well, he's about due for his annual injury. That
leaves nothing in the bullpen!

From Papi to the Cubbie pen. I think Marmol is the real deal based on what I have seen of him. I hope Wood isn't up to his annual injury. I like a lot of
things about Wrigley and the Cubs old fashioned game presentation.

The team is deep, the bench is probably one of the best in baseball. Drew is out of his long slumber (good timing JD) It would be terrific if we had Papi for
the late season or the post season. Manny seems to be having some Hammy issues so it is nice to have him be the DH, if Papi were healthy what would we be doing
with Manny and his nagging hamstring?
Sue
Sorry to ask this--did we just win ANOTHER World Series?

Good news. Papi's hard cast was removed and the pain in the wrist has gone away, they put on a removable splint. It will probably be at least a couple of
more weeks before he will be back but at least it's a step in the right direction to having him return.
