I just want to say shame on Coco for putting the team in the position. He was hit in the thigh. There was no need to charge the mound. He slid in unnecessarily
hard on a steal attempt. He deserved to get drilled in the back. Now we have all these injuries and have to deal with suspensions. Very selfish on his part.

I thought Gomes would have gotten more than 5 games for his actions.
What did Casey do to earn his suspension? I didn't see anything in the highlights that involved Casey. Crisp will NOT win his appeal.

From what I saw, Casey didn't throw any punches but was just trying to separate people. I was susprised to see Lester's name, since I didn't see
the umpire give him a warning. I think Gomes and Crawford should have got the 7, like Coco did. They were wailing on Coco. I didn't see any of the Red Sox
throw any punches.

I agree that Crisp's actions are inexcusable. That's why I don't think he'll get a reduction in his sentence on appeal. 7 games for causing
that brawl is fair IMO.
Does anyone know if any of the Devil Rays appealed their suspension?

I don't understand why Casey got suspended at all...
Coco deserves his 7 days IMO.
Every day is a new adventure!

Did anyone see anything that Casey did that warrants a suspension?
Lester did hit two batters in what was otherwise a great pitching performance on his part. I'm not surprised he got his 5 games. It can't be 4 games because he can simply take the time off between his starts. The D-Rays are not happy they got more from this fight, but what I saw in the highlights, I'm really not surprised since they seemed to want to beat on Coco.

Sorry, if coco "deserved" to get hit by a pitch then the pitcher deserved to be charged by coco. I'm tired of pitchers having free reign to
throw at batters and batters having no recourse. Yeah yeah, it's all "part of the game". Why isn't it part of the game for the batter to
run out with his bat and "just hit the pitcher in the thigh"?
Gomes should have gotten at least as many days as coco for coming in so late and throwing punches at someone being pinned to ground by the catcher. |

stupid. They plunk you in the thigh, the next time you see them, one of your pitchers drills them in the butt. That would've been the SMART way to do it.

I thought Gomes would get more just because this is the second time for him. He got suspended for fighting when Duncan slid into Iwamora in spring training.

Here's Jon Lester's take on his suspension from this morning's Boston Herald:
http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view/2008_06_09_Red_Sox_pitcher_Jon_Lester_perplexed_by_MLB_suspension_logic/srvc=sports&position=also Here's one quote: "It really is B.S. that I got suspended and Shields, the guy that hit somebody, only gets one more game than me," Lester said. "I didn't throw any punches, and didn't hit anybody on purpose. You have to talk to them and find out why." Joan |

Even the Rays commentators said that Lester didn't hit Crawford intentionally.
MLB officials must have viewed the tape, saw that Crawford was fighting instead of just breaking the fight up, and figured Lester must have hit him on purpose. |

Even if we take the most pro-Coco view of this, his charging the mound was going to be greeted with a harsh suspension.
First of all you have the history of these two teams going at each other. The MLB office is going to make the strongest statement that this will not be tolerated. Then you have the nature of the HBP. It was not dangerous and not intended to injury. Yet Crisp chose to charge the mound and create a very dangerous situation for all the other players. He was going to get the hammer from MLB and should. One could argue that Gomes could have easily been given the same penalty as Crisp and I personally don't know the counter argument to that. But it is also very obvious that Crisp was not a good guy in all of this. Better he took off from first and blew up another middle infielder or left it to his pitcher to deal with. Baseball is full of self policing and unwritten rules and the nature of the HBP just did not deserve Crisp's reaction. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt but the danger of that certainly guided MLB in their penalties as it should be. |

Coco's suspension was reduced from 7 to 5 games. From Gordon Edes on boston.com:
Major Leauge Baseball reduced Coco Crisp's suspension from 7 games to 5. The punishment, the result of Crisp charging the mound against Tampa Bay earlier this month at Fenway Park, is scheduled to begin tomorrow, which means Crisp would miss the final two games of the Houston series and all three games of the upcoming Rays' series. Crisp would be eligible to return to the lineup Thursday for the opener of a four-game series against the Yankees in New York. Crisp is the only Sox player who hasn't served his time for the incident against Tampa Bay. Sean Casey completed his three-game suspension Wednesday and
is eligible to return tonight against the Astros, while Jon Lester served a five-game suspension from June 6-11.

It's probably just as well that Coco doesn't play in Tampa, of course that doesn't mean that other players decide to continue things. I have to
assume the umpires will issues warnings at the beginning of games just to make sure nothing happens especially that some RS players have said this isn't
over. We don't want to ahve any more suspensions.
