Interesting tidbit from Gordon Edes in this morning's Boston Globe:
Drawn-out processFrancona expressed some frustration regarding the availability of outfielder J.D. Drew, who has not played in a week because of back tightness. Drew, who missed the two regular-season games against the Athletics in Tokyo and all three games here, took batting practice and some fly balls in the outfield before the game. Francona said he hopes to know whether Drew can play tomorrow night after the Sox hold a full-squad workout this afternoon in Oakland. "He started to feel good, but he didn't hit [Saturday]. I thought he'd hit, but he didn't feel ready to hit. I definitely think he feels better. It puts me in a little bit of a bind, because it makes it harder for me to make a judgment: OK, first of all, is he ready to play, and is he ready to help us win?" Jacoby Ellsbury started all three games in right field in Drew's absence. "I'm hoping to play [vs. the A's]," Drew said. "I just want to make sure I don't have a negative reaction." |

I am not worried about JD Drew. He is hurt, he'll recover. It is odd we've had a numebr of back injuries (Beckett, Wakefield, Drew, Lugo). Is it
catchy?
Last season Drew was dealing with some serious personal issues. His wife was pregnant and his son was going through surgery for serious medical issues. Imagine coming home to that after a long road trip? Must have been worse for his wife. This year, I expect he'll settle in and have the kind of season he showed during the playoffs. One of the reasons Francona is frustrated is that he's also trying to deal with Bobby Kielty. If Drew is out, he could use Kielty as a 4th outfielder. But, Kielty is deciding whether or not to take an assignment in Pawtucket. Just not good timing for Tito. http://rationalsoxfan.blogspot.com/ |

I AM worried about J.D. Drew. Guy needs to play ball.
Francona doesn't seem like the type of manager who would question the guy not hitting if he thought he wasn't healthy enough.

They say he is going to play in tomorrow's game (Wed), we'll have to see if he does.

It could be worse. We could have Carl Pavano.
