Rem Pup Posts: 101 02/19/08 7:27 PM Rem Pup	Can anyone name the starting catcher for the 2006 World Champion Cardinals? Yadier Molina. Did his .216-6-49 win it all for the Cards? Anyone think AJ Pierzynski was the reason the White Sox won it all in 2005? How about the catcher for the 2002 World Champion Angels? Benjie Molina. Anyone think his .245-5-47 won it all for the Angels? How about the 2001 World Champion Diamondbacks? Damian Miller. Anyone think his .271-13-47 was what won it all for the D-Backs?? My point is, a catcher's offense is a minimal contribution for a team with a good offense already. The main thing needed from a catcher is defense. Varitek has been average defensively, and his bat hasn't done much either the last few years. Any replacement won't be much of a downgrade here. Kotteras and Brown are both as good defensively as Varitek is now, and they both have potential to hit decently, although that didn't matter to the WS Champions listed above.

An intelegent catcher is truely the quarterback on the team. Everyone else is just a catcher. As for stats, the most important stat is how this team plays when he is not in the line up. How the 'attitude' & atmosphere of the team begins to contort and the pitching falls apart. How they begin to tank in the standings. Short memories, still a valuable asset.

RemDawg Posts: 4228 02/20/08 9:24 PM LOUD Dawg	I would give Tek a 2 year deal. His bat is not going to be any worse than the last two years. Kotteras is not the answer now or in the future. He took a huge step back in 2007. The future is Wagner with a Kotteras as the backup. I would expect Kotteras to backup as soon as 2009. Wagner is likely to be at Portland this year and Pawtucket for a chunk of 2009. I expect him to maybe get a year 2009 or 2010 backing up Tek (thus Kotteras being shuffled out in a trade if Wagner moves along quicker). Brown is very good defensively but is a clone of Tek and Belli with the stick, not much there. Kotteras has no bat and his glove is very average. Wagner and Weeden are the studs and not too far away. As for someone mentioning Tek playing another year or two then becoming a coach, that won't happen. With catching so scarce, he will be playing for at least 4 more years. He looked good in the clutch last year, won a few games with walk off homers. His defense is getting better. I hope he will get a chance now rather than later. He had a slow start last year but after the All Star game he batted over .300

Can the RS get a deal done prior to the season that will feel like a value to both parties? If you are the RS do you fret about doing an extension with Scott Boras who typically takes everyone to market unless they are damaged goods (ask the Dodgers about the Gagne extension). The business stuff aside and not factoring in "stupid" money, Varitek would a decent resign. If he gets too expensive one has to consider the obvious factors like a likely decline in offensive production and higher probability of injury with slower recovery. It would be foolish to assume he would be top 4 catcher over the course of the next contract but would be as good as most likely replacements. Money factors because while his years of service and popularity will equate to some sort of "home town bonus", that will have its limits with any organization, let alone the very fast moving Sox.

His answer was that if Jason Varitek was injured for 2 months or more, it would really hurt us. Especially with 2 young pitchers to help. Reminded me of what it was like when he got hurt and was out for awhile a couple of years ago. Not a pretty end to our year as I remember. I hope he misses time (not that I hope he gets injured or anything) and the Red Sox go on a winning streak without him, just so they can get the idea that the Red Sox are more than fine without Jason Varitek. Every day is a new adventure!

It's too bad there's not room on the 25-man roster to carry an extra catcher besides Mirabelli, because using Kotteras once a week would give Tek more rest and move Kotty into a possible replacement for Tek. Of course Kotty would get more work at Pawtucket. It's nice to know he's there, just in case. Ann

Jason is by all accounts a good clubhouse guy, not a guy who creates harmony but a guy who does nurture urgency. He is very prepared to attack batters. His offensive skills are diminishing but he still is a decent stick and a little better than average offensive catcher. (RISP aside) But the "collapse" of 2006 had so very little to do with Varitek going down. The RS had sub-standard pitching and when the strength of schedule evened out in the second half of the season the Sox paid for this in W-L column. Now with that said, at this point in his career, Mirabelli would be a heck of a drop off from Varitek and Kotteras is far from can't miss and early ST results mean very little, much to the relief of Lester and Buccholz.
