Vista/Firefox Access |
Lead | ||
|
I'm probably the only one this issue, but usually I access the Remy Report and message board through Firefox on Tiger with no problems at all. But I also
have a laptop now which is running Vista. (*sigh*) Anyway, I can't seem to access the message board through Firefox on Vista - just sits there not loading
- even though everything else so far accesses fine, and I'm stuck using Explorer. I don't see any Active-X options coming up. I'm relatively new to
Vista, so anyone have any experience or ideas on this? It's more of a mild inconvenience than anything else, but it bugs me to not know why this is
happening.
Thanks! Lisa

I have Vista on my laptop also, but XP on my main computer.
I'm a programmer for a software company and I have had multiple customers switch back to XP from Vista because of multiple problems that still exist on Vista with all different brands of software and drivers (although our software runs fine on Vista: go figure!). If I didn't have to have Vista on my laptop for the sake of testing compatibility, I wouldn't have it, believe me! I still have problems on Vista with all different software packages & drivers. So my advice is this: GET XP ON YOUR LAPTOP!!!!! |

I'm increasingly convinced this is a Vista problem.
I am able to access fine through Firefox on Windows 98 and Mac OS X. (From the sounds of replies here, 2000 and XP seem to be okay.) Opera through Vista has the same problem as Firefox, although I rarely have any other access issues with Opera. Haven't tried access the RR via Opera on the Mac yet but will. I considered very hard getting a downgrade to XP, but my job too requires keeping up-to-date on this stuff. (My next great foray will be into Linux.) I can access through Explorer sure enough, but it galls me to have an operating system dictate which browsers I can use to access certain sites. The Remy Report is the only site thus far where I've run into this. Maybe it's an Adobe Flash issue? Thanks for the feedback so far. It does help me narrow down the possible causes. Lisa

HA!!!!! Success!! Quick and easy download of Adobe Flash 9 fixed the problem for both Firefox and Opera. (I am using the latter right now.)

I agree, sbukoski - Firefox is a very solid product. I use both and I prefer Firefox as well.

You know, 6 months ago I was very stubborn about switching from IE to Firefox, despite the prattling advice from others on the subject. However, after trying
it out, I've done a complete 180. Firefox is vastly superior. The only thing I don't like is the printing functionality, but other than that, Firefox
destroys IE.
I like the new look of the site. |

Firefox rocks! Probably one of the biggest factors which led to the demise of
Netscape.

I have firefox and use a mac-top so no problem with firefox here. Though I have had problems where firefox isn't supported by some sites which bites. Same
with Apple. Frustrating but it isn't the browser. Poor browser, good dawg.

sites that require IE (horrible wed design approach, in my mind) without switching your browser!

I haven't [thus far] run into any sites that don't run Firefox that the Adobe Flash patch didn't fix (here and nbc.com). I see that gOS has it
bundled as its browser, and I'm currently working to get an unused PC set up to run gOS, which is Linux based (Ubuntu). Sue, I don't know what OS
you're running on your Mac, but WINE seems to have decent looking ability to run Windows apps for both Linux and, according to their site [though I
haven't tried it yet myself], Mac OS X. I plan to try it on gOS. Their site is www.winehq.org. Apparently it will even run Microsoft Office on Linux,
although I was so taken with OpenOffice (free!! free is good!!) on the Mac that I downloaded it on Vista. I see no good reason to go back to MS Office at this
point when OpenOffice is fully compatible with it anyway. If I'm reading correctly, WINE still requires Intel, but my Mac is Intel based anyway.
Far afield from my original Firefox issue, but it does look like - hopefully - even on the older PC I'm trying, Flash will let Firefox run just fine, even if it's an earlier Flash version. I'm curious if anyone else out there on the RR is running Ubuntu. Lisa (Edited to correct untruth that gOS is Google's operating system - it just works closely with Google's tools.)

I use either Safari or Firefox. No problems with either one.
