It is more likely than not that Coco will be traded if real value meeting a need is available. If so, Kielty and Casey seem like excellent reserves to go along with Cora. That problably will be determined by how well Ellsbury does in Spring training and whether it seems like he picks up where he left off in the World Series. A lot can happen in the Spring and the Red Sox seem like they are protecting themselves to make sure they break camp with the right complement of healthy players....

Not being guaranteed makes it even more implausible that Kielty would have signed without any assurances and with 4 starting caliber outfielders. From Kielty's perspective, it wouldn't make much sense if he didn't have some kind of assurance. He could have gotten a guaranteed contract elsewhere.

Quote:
Its not a guranteed deal

Exactly. So I read this is a great deal for the Sox, because they can try to move Coco now (or Ellsbury, I guess) and if they are unable to get what they want, they keep both of them and Kielty becomes a FA. If they do trade, then Kielty is gauranteed to be a bench player, making decent money at that.<div...

Re-signing Kielty seems a sure sign that Coco will be traded before the season begins.

It's very hard to believe that Kielty would sign if there were already 4 starting caliber outfielders in the picture; that would basically give him zero starts. He must have been given assurance that Crisp would be gone or he wouldn't have signed IMO.
